ARDEX X 78 is a high-performance, grey, MICROTEC fibre-reinforced, cement-based adhesive designed specifically for floor tiles. It has an extended open time of up to 60 minutes, allowing more flexibility during installation. Its semi-pourable consistency makes it particularly suitable for large format floor tiles, ensuring excellent adhesion and ease of use.
- Versatile Application: ARDEX X78 is ideal for installing low-porosity tiles such as fully vitrified or porcelain tiles, as well as glass mosaics, porcelain mosaics, and terrazzo.
- Industry Standards: Certified under BS EN 12004 with a C2 E designation, it is recognized for its improved cementitious qualities and extended open time, providing more flexibility in various conditions.
- Durability: With tensile adhesion strengths of over 1 N/mm², even after exposure to water, heat aging, and freeze-thaw cycles, ARDEX X78 is suitable for both internal and external applications, including swimming pools.
- Strong Bond: ARDEX X78 bonds well to a variety of surfaces, such as concrete, cement, sand screeds, heated sub-floors, anhydrite screeds, and even existing ceramic tiles, making it a versatile choice for different flooring needs.
In summary, ARDEX X 78 is a robust and adaptable adhesive, perfect for large format tile installations, offering strong adhesion, flexibility, and durability in demanding environments.
Coverage: A 20kg bag of ARDEX X78 will produce about 16.65 litres of adhesive mortar. You will need around 1.2kg of powder for each square metre of surface for every millimetre of adhesive thickness. The exact coverage depends on the type of tile, the notched trowel used, and how the tiles are applied. For example, a 20kg bag will cover roughly 5.6 square metres when applied at a thickness of 3mm.

ARDEX X 78 is perfect for installing low-porosity tiles like fully vitrified or porcelain tiles, as well as glass and porcelain mosaics, and terrazzo. It meets the BS EN 12004 C2 E standard, which means it’s an improved cement-based adhesive with an extended working time. The adhesive has excellent tensile strength, holding over 1 N/mm², even after being exposed to water, heat, and freeze-thaw conditions. This makes it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, including swimming pools. The mortar’s semi-pourable consistency makes it easy to work with, especially for large format floor tiles, and it bonds well to surfaces like concrete, screeds, heated sub-floors, and existing ceramic tiles.
Surface Preparation: Before tiling, ensure that all surfaces are clean, firm, and free of dust, dirt, oil, grease, or anything else that could prevent the adhesive from sticking. The surface must be allowed to dry properly, following the guidelines in BS 5385-3:2007. When installing tiles, follow the recommendations in BS 5385 and BS 8000: Part 11. For ceramic tiles, the surface should be even, with no more than a 3mm gap under a 2m straight edge (Surface Regularity 1). ARDEX X78 can be applied to both dry and moist surfaces, but moisture-sensitive materials must remain dry after the tiles are installed. For wet areas, consider using the ARDEX WPC Waterproof Protection System to prevent water damage.
Mixing: To prepare ARDEX X78, add the powder to clean water in a clean container and mix thoroughly to create a semi-pourable mortar that’s easy to work with. Use an ARDEX mixing paddle with a variable-speed drill for best results. The recommended mixing ratio is about 2.75 parts ARDEX X78 powder to 1 part water, with a 20kg bag requiring about 7.2 litres of water. Don’t exceed the maximum water content. You can adjust the consistency to suit the conditions and materials. Apply the mortar in temperatures above 5°C, and note that it has a working life of about 3 hours at 20°C.
Application: Use a trowel to spread the mixed mortar on the prepared surface, then comb it through with a notched trowel to create a ribbed bed. Press the tiles into place within the adhesive’s open time (up to 60 minutes), using a twisting and sliding motion to ensure a solid bond. For the best results, aim to fix the tiles within 40 minutes and adjust them within 30 minutes at 20°C.
Grouting: Once the adhesive has fully hardened, you can begin grouting. For floor tiles, ARDEX X78 usually hardens enough after 24 hours at 20°C to allow foot traffic, though this can vary depending on the tile and surface porosity. Higher temperatures will speed up the process, while lower temperatures will slow it down. Use ARDEX-FLEX Tile Grout for general grouting, or ARDEX EG8 Cement/Epoxy Hybrid Grout in areas requiring chemical resistance and hygienic joints, like commercial kitchens.
