Before tiling, always check that the background you’re tiling onto can support the weight of your tiles, plus adhesive and grout.
Below is a guide to the maximum weight permitted for the wall substrate.
Remember that plywood is no longer recommended as a wall tiling background.
WALL SUBSTRATES MAXIMUM WEIGHT OF TILING PER M²
GYPSUM PLASTER 20KG/M²
GYPSUM PLASTERBOARD DIRECT 32KG/M²
(WITHOUT A PLASTER SKIM)
FOAM-CORED TILE BACKING BOARD UP TO 100KG/M²
FIBRE-CEMENT BOARDS UP TO 100KG/M²
GYPSUM FIBRE BOARDS APPROXIMATELY 35-40KG/M²
MAGNESIUM OXIDE BOARDS UP TO 100KG/M²
These weight limits are all approximate – please check with the board manufacturer what they recommend before tiling.
