BAL Quickset Render is a rapid-setting, polymer-modified cement:sand render designed to prepare wall backgrounds prior to fixing ceramic tiles and natural stone. Developed for professional installers, it provides a reliable solution where speed, surface accuracy, and reduced downtime are critical on site.
The render is supplied as a pre-blended single-component powder, removing the need for gauging sand or additional admixtures. Once mixed with clean water, it produces a smooth, workable mortar suitable for internal and external wall applications, including dry and wet environments. Typical uses include bathrooms, showers, kitchens, and external façades where tiling will follow.
Quickset Render can be applied at thicknesses from 2mm up to 20mm in a single coat, making it suitable for correcting uneven masonry, blockwork, and concrete backgrounds. At 20°C, it has a pot life of approximately 30 minutes and sets in around 2 hours, allowing tiled finishes to be installed on the same day. This fast turnaround is particularly beneficial on refurbishment projects or tight commercial programmes.
Correct preparation is essential for performance. Substrates must be clean, sound, and free from dust, grease, or contamination. Concrete, brickwork, and blockwork should be allowed to dry for a minimum of six weeks. Highly porous backgrounds should be dampened prior to application to control suction, while plaster surfaces require priming with a suitable bonding agent. Glazed or low-porosity backgrounds must be mechanically keyed and treated with a slurry bonding coat to ensure adequate adhesion.
Application is carried out using a steel trowel. A thin bonding coat is first worked into the substrate, followed immediately by the full render thickness while the initial coat remains wet. The surface should be ruled flat and finished with a wood float between 40 and 60 minutes after application. Finished surfaces must achieve sufficient flatness to comply with SR1 tolerances, ensuring compatibility with modern tile fixing standards.
