Tips for working with structural silicone

Tips for working with structural silicone

To help you understand more about structural silicone sealants, we have rounded up some advice for working with silicone below…

Check the specification

Structural projects require efficient and reliable sealants. Therefore prior to using a structural silicone we advise reading the specification, uses and limitations to fully understand whether the silicone is suitable for your project. Especially if you are undergoing home renovations and aren’t an industry expert, this key step could prevent detrimental issues for your project.

Consider the substrates you are using

A key part of working with structural silicones is understanding how different substrates can be sealed together. Some silicone sealants only work with specific substrates such as glass and metals, so if you are looking to seal brickwork, these won’t be suitable for your project. Looking at the different substrates you are working with will help you make an informed decision on the structural silicone you choose to opt for.

Invest in equipment

Investing in equipment such as application guns and profiling tools is essential for a durable finish. We recommend researching the most appropriate application tools for the silicone you choose. These can often be reused if you opt for a high quality product and so, you can continue to use these for further projects you may have.

Don’t forget about cleaning and the finish of your application

Cleaning after application or any smears and spills of sealant will result in a high-quality finish and overall look. We recommend purchasing some wipes or cleaning products to make sure the final result is seamless.
