Bond It Rubber Bitumen Emulsion is a rubber latex modified waterproofing solution designed to prevent water ingress and damp in walls and floors. Once applied, the product dries to form a flexible black coating that acts as an effective damp proof membrane.
This outlines key preparation and application steps to help ensure effective installation.
Surface Preparation
All installation stages should comply with BS 8102:2022 Code of Practice for protection of buildings against water from the ground.
Before application, surfaces must be:
-
Smooth and structurally sound
-
Clean and free from dust, grease or oil
-
Free from loose materials or contaminants
Concrete bases should be finished with a wood float to produce a smooth surface, as heavily tamped finishes can prevent an even coating.
Priming
Priming is important for ensuring good adhesion, particularly on porous surfaces.
Two methods can be used:
-
Apply a bitumen primer and allow it to dry fully.
-
Alternatively, dilute Rubber Bitumen Emulsion with water at a ratio of 1:6 to create a primer coat.
Allow the priming layer to dry before applying subsequent coats.
Damp Proofing Floors
For floor damp proofing:
-
Apply using a brush.
-
Apply a minimum of two coats, each at approximately 1 litre per m².
-
Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second coat at right angles to the first.
-
Extend the coating up the wall to meet the existing damp proof course.
Once fully dry, a sand/cement or concrete screed approximately 50mm thick can be applied over the membrane.
Waterproofing Walls
Application varies depending on wall condition:
Exterior Walls
-
Level uneven surfaces using cement mortar.
-
Apply three coats at 0.5 litres per m², allowing each coat to dry.
-
Blind the final tacky coat with clean sharp sand.
Interior Walls (Moderately Damp)
-
Remove wallpaper, paint and loose materials.
-
Apply two coats at 0.5 litres per m² with drying time between coats.
-
Leave a 300mm uncoated strip at the top to allow moisture evaporation.
Drying Time
Typical drying time is 24–48 hours, depending on weather conditions and application thickness.
Cleaning
Clean tools immediately after use with water. If the material has dried, paraffin or white spirit can be used.
