The benefits of backing foam

The benefits of backing foam

As a Sealant Supplies specialist, we are often asked how sealant applicators can improve finish, reduce costs and ensure proper usage of sealants. Well, backing foam may just be the answer…

This innovative product has a huge range of benefits however is often thought of as a last resort by sealant applicators. So, why should you start implementing backing rods into your sealant routine?

Benefits of using backing foam

Backing foam is an extremely useful tool in sealant application, solving some common problems that are experienced during both small and large-scale projects.

The main benefits of using backing foam:

  • Better tooling

Using backing foam before applying sealants can help to improve the quality of the tooling, providing a guide where the sealant should be applied and ensuring that the end result looks seamless.

The backing rod also sets a perimeter to what the depth of the sealant should be, which also ensures a better finish.

  • Prevents 3-sided bonding

Having a backing rod in place in the joint also prevents 3-sided bonding which often occurs in projects with a large-scale requirement for sealant application. 3-sided bonding is problematic as the sealant isn’t able to perform in the correct way, preventing flexibility within the joint.

The rod instead ensures proper function of the sealant in the correct area, sealing only the required joints and gaps.

  • Prevents overuse of sealants

Backing foam also prevents the overuse of sealants within joints and gaps. Having a guide to follow and a clear indication of where the depth should be ensures that sealant is used in the correct quantities.

Not only does this ensure the project is finished to a high standard it also saves sealant applicators money in the long run and is a much more cost-effective method of using sealants.

  • High moisture resistance

In line with many sealants, backing foam has a high moisture resistance, therefore making it ideal for use in joints. The sealant doesn’t stick to the backing rod therefore the major properties such as flexibility and water resistance aren’t affected by the presence of the rod.
