Step 1 – Ensure the plasterboard is correctly installed
- Plasterboard should be fixed at maximum 300mm centres both vertically and horizontally.
- Ensure that surfaces to be tiled are flat, clean, sound and free from dust and contamination.
Step 2 – Check the combined weight of your tiles and adhesive
- The weight of tiling (including adhesive and grout) to a plasterboard background direct (without plaster skim) should not exceed a maximum weight of 32kg per m2 – the maximum weight for plasterboard with skim is only 20kg/m2 – so it is advised to tile direct to plasterboard.
Step 3 – Reinforce board joints
- All board joints and internal corners should be reinforced with scrim tape following manufacturers recommendations before tiling.
Step 4 – Wet areas
- British Standards recommend that any water sensitive background such as plasterboard used in a wet area should be tanked.
- Waterproof the background with ARDEX WPC for showers. For full instruction details visit ARDEX.co.uk
