Tiling onto Painted Surfaces

Step 1 – Ensure the surface is flat and level

  • Before tiling commences ensure that surfaces you are tiling are flat and level.

Step 2 – Remove any dirt and grease

  • Use a damp sponge or cloth to clean any dirt or grease from the painted surface

Step 3 – Remove any loose or flaky paint

  • If any of the paint is lose or flaky, remove with a paint scraper or sander.

Step 5 – Prime the walls

  • ARDEX’s advice is always to remove the painted finish to reveal a sound substrate without barriers to adhesion. Where the contractor deems the painted finish as sound, it should be primed with ARDEX P 82 primer before tiling. A trial application is recommended first (internal dry areas only).

Step 6 – Choose your adhesive carefully

  • When tiling with ceramic or porcelain tiles, choose your ARDEX adhesive carefully. Consider the tile type, the environment, temperature and humidity and your fixing methods – as these impact on your choice of ARDEX tile adhesive.
