Before you start
– Ensure the room is warm, ideally above 10°C, before you begin. While the chalk paint has a low odour, opening a window or door will help with ventilation. Lay down a dust sheet to protect your floors—any accidental spills can be easily washed out.
How to prepare bare wood
– Lightly sand the surface using 120-grit sandpaper, following the direction of the wood grain to create a smooth base and help the paint adhere. Allow the dust to settle, then wipe it away with white spirit and a cloth.
How to prepare painted wood
– If the existing paint may date from before the 1960s, it could contain lead, so seek professional advice before proceeding. For paint in good condition, lightly sand with 240-grit sandpaper to improve adhesion. If the paint is flaking or in poor condition, sand it back to bare wood using 120-grit sandpaper or an electric sander. Once complete, remove dust with white spirit and a cloth.
Application
1. Stir the paint thoroughly to ensure an even consistency with no lumps.
2. Apply the first coat using a synthetic brush, working in the direction of the wood grain, and allow it to dry for four hours.
3.Apply a second coat, which will be touch dry in just 30 minutes.
Aftercare
Cleaning
– Once dry, clean the painted surface as you normally would, keeping it free from excess dust and dirt to maintain its appearance.
Repair
– To fix any damage or cracks, lightly sand the affected area and apply a couple of additional coats to restore the finish.
