PREPARATION
General
Substrates receiving BAL Bedding Mortar must be constructed using a suitable Type 1 MOT sub-base, laid to the correct depth and fully compacted. The sub-base must be stable and not prone to settlement, as the stated application thicknesses apply only to rigid, stable substrates.
All external pavers and tiles must be free from standing or pooling water. This is typically achieved by forming adequate falls to direct surface water toward a suitable drainage point such as a gully, linear drain, or the edge of the patio or terrace. Wherever possible, surface water should be directed away from buildings. All external paving installations require a stable and well-prepared base.
MIXING
1. Mix 25kg of BAL Bedding Mortar with 2 litres of clean water to achieve a semi-dry consistency.
2. When squeezed in the hand, the mixed mortar should retain its shape without crumbling, leaving the gloved hand slightly moist. When compacted onto the base, no surface film of water should appear.
3. Mix using a pan, trough, or other forced-action mixer. Free-fall mixers are not suitable for mixing semi-dry screed mortars. Ensure all equipment is clean and do not add additional cement, lime, screed additives, or other materials to the mix.
PREPARATION
– For unbonded mortar beds laid on a Type 1 MOT sub-base, or semi-dry bonded screeds applied to mature concrete in external environments, it is good practice to introduce adequate falls within the sub-grade or concrete to promote effective drainage and prevent ponding.
– Where patios are installed adjacent to buildings, particular care must be taken to ensure sufficient drainage and that finished levels remain well below any damp proof courses. The supporting sub-base must always be stable and not susceptible to settlement.
– Note: When applying to concrete substrates, prime with a 2–3mm layer of BAL Priming Slurry Bond and apply the mortar onto the wet slurry. Further guidance can be found in the relevant British Standards.
– The working time of mixed mortar exceeds 1 hour at 20°C. Limit the quantity of mortar mixed and the area worked so that levelling, finishing, and tile fixing can be completed within this time. Where new bays are laid against hardened mortar, vertical daywork joints are recommended and should be treated with BAL Priming Slurry Bond before applying fresh BAL Bedding Mortar onto the wet slurry.
THICKNESS
– On concrete substrates, BAL Bedding Mortar should be applied at thicknesses ranging from a minimum of 10mm up to a maximum of 100mm.
– On Type 1 MOT sub-bases, apply BAL Bedding Mortar between a minimum of 25mm and a maximum of 100mm. Sub-bases must be of a suitable Type 1 MOT grade, laid to the correct depth, fully compacted, and stable. The stated thicknesses apply only to rigid, stable substrates.
INSTALLATION: FIXING PAVERS/TILES
– While the mortar remains wet (within 1 hour at 20°C), apply BAL Priming Slurry Bond to the mortar bed using a brush, roller, or trowel. Apply the same slurry to the back of the porcelain tile to achieve 100% coverage and a total slurry thickness of 2–3mm before bedding the tile into the wet mortar.
– Adjust tile position as required and tap into place using a rubber mallet. BAL Bedding Mortar should be applied at temperatures of 5°C and rising.
