DOWSIL™ R-40 Universal Cleaner is a ready-to-use, transparent solvent blend formulated to effectively clean a wide range of substrates commonly used in bonding applications, including structural glazing, insulating glass systems, windows, doors, and other construction assemblies. Its fast-evaporating, easy-to-apply formula ensures efficient surface preparation for reliable adhesion on non-porous materials such as glass, metals, and plastics.

Usable Life and Storage
Containers must remain tightly closed when not in use and should be stored in a warehouse suitable for flammable materials. When kept in original, unopened containers at temperatures between 5 °C and 30 °C, the product has a usable life of four years from the date of manufacture

How to Use
– Proper surface cleaning is essential for achieving durable bonding applications. A thorough and careful procedure ensures substrates are fully prepared before sealant application. DOWSIL™ R-40 Universal Cleaner is recommended for this purpose, using the two-cloth cleaning method, which should be followed for every application.
Two-Cloth Cleaning Method
– The two-cloth cleaning method is a proven technique for cleaning non-porous surfaces. Using a single cloth is less effective. Only clean, soft, absorbent, lint-free cloths should be used. The method involves:
– Brush away any loose materials from the surface.
– Pour a small amount of cleaning solvent into a separate buffer container (do not use directly from the original container).
– Wipe the joint surfaces with adequate force to remove dirt and contaminants.
– Immediately follow with a second clean, dry cloth to wipe away the solvent before it evaporates. Inspect the cloth: if still dirty, repeat step 3 with a fresh cloth until the second cloth remains clean.
– Allow the surface to dry completely, typically 5–30 minutes depending on temperature and humidity.
– Apply silicone sealant within 4 hours after cleaning.
