ARDEX FEATHER FINISH is an ultra-rapid drying patching and smoothing compound that offers exceptional bond strength to a variety of surfaces, including concrete, plywood, sand/cement screeds, existing smoothing compounds, and ceramic tiles, all without the need for priming. Specifically designed for both commercial and domestic applications, this compound is ideal for preparing surfaces before the installation of resilient floor coverings, such as luxury vinyl tiles or sheet vinyl. ARDEX FEATHER FINISH effectively addresses issues like patching, filling, and feather finishing daywork joints, ridges, gouges, depressions, and uneven trowel marks in subfloors, as well as smoothing joints between staggered plywood sheets. Additionally, it is suitable for use on heated cement/sand screeds.
Key Features:
- Rapid Drying: Allows for quick application and installation of floor coverings without extended downtime.
- High Bond Strength: Provides strong adhesion to various substrates without the need for priming.
- Versatile Application: Ideal for patching, filling, and smoothing various subfloor imperfections.
- Heated Screed Compatibility: Can be used on heated cement/sand screeds, making it suitable for a wider range of flooring projects.
Coverage: An 11kg bag of ARDEX FEATHER FINISH can cover approximately 50m² when applied as a skim coat on a plywood subfloor. However, thicker applications will result in reduced coverage; for example, it will cover about 10m² at a thickness of 1mm. A 5kg bag provides coverage of around 4.5m² at a 1mm thickness, or approximately 22.5m² when used as a scratch coat.
Storage and Shelf Life: ARDEX FEATHER FINISH should be stored in its unopened packaging, elevated off the ground, in a cool, dry environment, and protected from excessive drafts. When stored under these conditions, the shelf life of the product is six months from the date indicated on the packaging.

ARDEX FEATHER FINISH is specifically designed for both commercial and residential applications, serving as an ideal preparation solution before installing resilient floor coverings such as luxury vinyl tiles or sheet vinyl. This compound is perfect for quickly skimming plywood surfaces, patching, filling, and feather finishing daywork joints, ridges, gouges, depressions, and uneven trowel marks in the subfloor. It also effectively smooths joints between staggered plywood sheets. Additionally, it is compatible for use on heated cement/sand screeds, making it versatile for various flooring projects.
Surface Preparation
Before applying ARDEX FEATHER FINISH, ensure that the subfloor is dry, sound, and free from dust, plaster, grease, paint, polish, and any loosely adhered or water-softenable materials. Check any remaining adhesive residues to confirm that they are not water-softenable and that they possess adequate hardness and cohesive strength to support a leveling compound. In domestic settings only, ARDEX FEATHER FINISH can be applied over thin, sound, and well-bonded adhesive residues. However, these residues must not be affected by the initial wetting from the applied FEATHER FINISH or the adhesive used for the new floor covering. In commercial applications, it is not advisable to use ARDEX FEATHER FINISH over adhesive residues due to the potential adverse effects on bond strength from high point loading.
Mixing
To mix ARDEX FEATHER FINISH, use a ratio of 2 parts powder to 1 part water (by volume). Begin by adding the powder to the required amount of clean water in a clean mixing container, stirring thoroughly until a slump-free mortar is achieved.
Application
ARDEX FEATHER FINISH can be easily applied using a steel trowel, allowing for a true feather edge or a thickness of up to 3mm. For applications between 3mm and 12mm, it is recommended to build up the compound in thin layers; alternatively, consult the ARDEX ARDURAPID A 45 datasheet for further guidance. Note that when applying to wooden floors, the maximum total depth should not exceed 3mm.
Drying and Hardening
Once the ARDEX FEATHER FINISH layer has sufficiently hardened, as indicated by the adhesive trowel not damaging the surface, floor coverings can be installed. Depending on the absorbency of the subfloor and site conditions, a skim coat of ARDEX FEATHER FINISH should typically be hard enough to receive the floor covering within 15 minutes. Thicker applications will require additional drying time.
