ARDEX X 7001/ARDEX X 7001W is also suitable for adhering certain acoustic matting systems before tiling and is recommended for internal use only. It can be used for fixing tilebacker boards to wood-based sheets and boards. The mixed mortar has a pourable consistency, allowing for solid bedding of tiles without the need to butter the back of the tiles.
Surface Preparation
Concrete:
Allow a minimum of 6 weeks, preferably 12 weeks, drying time before tiling new concrete. Mechanically clean the surface and remove any curing agents.
Cement/Sand Screed:
Apply a wood float finish and prevent rapid drying for 7 days. Allow the surface to air dry for at least 3 weeks before tiling.
Calcium Sulfate-Based Screeds (Anhydrite):
Ensure they are laid and prepared according to manufacturer recommendations. Sand the surface and confirm a moisture content of 0.5% or less. Prime with ARDEX P 51, diluted 3 parts water to 1 part primer.
Existing Glazed Ceramic Tiling:
Ensure existing tiles are well adhered. Thoroughly clean and rinse off before priming with ARDEX P 82 or ARDEX P4. Suitable for internal dry areas only.
Flooring Grade Asphalt (Sanded):
If the sand key is well adhered, no primer is required. For internal areas only. If the sand key is poor, proceed as for smooth asphalt.
Flooring Grade Asphalt (Smooth):
Prime with ARDEX P 82 for internal dry areas only.
Timber Sub-Floors:
Ensure boards are dry, conditioned to the environment, rigidly fixed, and free from adhesion barriers. Sand surfaces to remove polish, wax, or old adhesives. If additional stiffening is required, overlay with 15mm plywood or flooring-grade chipboard, sealed on the back and edges, and screw or nail down at 300mm centers. The wood surface must be stable and rigid to withstand imposed loads without deflection. Ceramic floor tiles should not be used on wood-based boards in wet or external areas. For damp areas, oversheet the wood floor with a waterproof tile backing or matting system.
Priming
Prime the prepared board surface with ARDEX P 51 primer, applied undiluted by brush in a single coat. Allow it to dry for at least 1 hour at 20°C.
Mixing
Add ARDEX X 7001/ARDEX X 7001W powder to clean water in a container and mix thoroughly to create a fluid, workable mortar. Use a mixing paddle with a 10mm chuck and a variable-speed electric drill. The ratio is approximately 3.5 parts powder to 1 part water, with a 20kg bag requiring around 4.5 litres of water. The mortar is ready to use immediately, with a pot life of around 1 hour at 20°C. Apply the adhesive at temperatures above 5°C.
Fixing Technique
Apply the mixed mortar onto the prepared sub-floor and comb through with a notched trowel to create straight ribs. Ensure solid bedding with no voids. ARDEX X 7001/ARDEX X 7001W has an extended open time of at least 30 minutes, though tiles should ideally be fixed within 15 minutes. If the mortar begins to stiffen, discard it; do not add water. Adjust tiles for up to 15 minutes after fixing.
For flat-backed tiles, use a 5mm x 5mm notch trowel, 8mm x 8mm for general floor tiling, and 10mm x 10mm for keyed extruded tiles. Ensure solid bedding is achieved, particularly on timber substrates, where the bed thickness should be between 1mm and 4mm.
