Trowel Recommendations
Area Trowel
Internal Dry Wall (up to 300x300mm tiles) Min 6mm Notched Trowel
Internal Wet Wall (up to 300x300mm tiles) Min 6mm Notched Solid Bed Trowel
External Walls & Floors Min 10mm Notched Solid Bed Trowel
Mosaics (up to 100x100mm tiles), including
with BAL RAPID-MAT/BAL FLEXBONE Min 4mm Notched Trowel
Notes:
– Ensure correct adhesive contact and thickness to both the background and tile in line with BS 5385, Parts 1–5.
– Follow British Standards guidelines: minimum 2mm joints for walls, 3mm for floors (sizes may vary depending on tile and environment). Contact BAL TECHNICAL ADVISORY AND SPECIFICATION SERVICE for more info.
– For larger format tiles, back-butter the tile with a thin layer of adhesive to ensure full bedding.
– For thick applications (max 12mm), reduce mixing water to maintain slump resistance. Do not use thick beds with porous or soft-bodied tiles. Ensure the substrate is level to SR1 to avoid excessive bedding.
Fixing Procedure
1. Apply adhesive to the wall or floor and comb to the required bed thickness, ensuring ribs run in one direction. Bed thickness: 2–6mm, up to 12mm in limited areas (max 0.5m²). For large or patterned tiles, apply adhesive to the tile reverse.
2. For mosaics, press sheets into adhesive with a rubber tile float, ensuring joints between sheets match tesserae. For tiles, press firmly into ribs with slight twisting/sliding for optimum contact.
3. Fix tiles before adhesive forms a skin (approx. 20 minutes at 20°C). If skin forms, remove adhesive and apply fresh layer. Do not add water to set adhesive.
4. Occasionally lift tiles to check adhesive coverage: min. 75% for dry areas, 100% for wet areas. Avoid voids.
5. Leave adequate joints and install movement joints per BS 5385, Parts 1–5.
6. Clean excess adhesive from tile faces and joints before it dries.
Grouting
1. Wait a minimum of 16 hours at 20°C after fixing. Use a BAL cementitious grout (e.g., BAL MICROMAX3 ECO GROUT) or epoxy grout (e.g., BAL ABSOLUTE GROUT).
2. For paper-faced mosaics: pre-grout sheets, remove surplus, place in position, tap down for full contact, and wet/remove paper before adhesive hardens. Clean tile face and finish grouting.
3. Fill movement joints with suitable sealant, e.g., BAL MICROMAX SILICONE SEALANT. Avoid use on surfaces sensitive to acetic acid. For intermediate movement joints, consider epoxy-polysulphide sealants or pre-formed movement joint strips for durability.
