ARDEX X 77 and ARDEX X 77 W are advanced, fibre-reinforced, cement-based adhesives available in grey and white. Designed for both floor and wall applications, these MICROTEC products offer exceptional adhesion and flexibility, with an extended open time of up to 60 minutes, double the industry requirement. Their superior slump resistance makes them ideal for fixing large format wall tiles.

  1. Versatility: ARDEX X 77 is perfect for fixing various tile types, including ceramic, fully vitrified tiles, glass mosaics, porcelain, and terrazzo, particularly those with low porosity.
  2. Performance Standards: Certified under BS EN 12004 C2 TE S1, ARDEX X 77 and ARDEX X 77 W exceed the standards for cementitious adhesives with improved properties like reduced slip and prolonged open time.
  3. Slump-Free and Strong Hold: The mixed mortar’s slump-free consistency provides high initial grab, making it ideal for heavy wall tiles, eliminating the need for battens or spacers.
  4. Wide Range of Substrates: These adhesives bond strongly to a variety of materials including concrete, heated sub-floors, gypsum plaster, plasterboard, and even primed existing tiles, making them suitable for internal and external use, including swimming pools.

In summary, ARDEX X 77 and ARDEX X 77 W offer superior performance in demanding tile installations, delivering enhanced flexibility, exceptional hold, and versatility across a wide range of surfaces.

Coverage: A 20kg bag of ARDEX X 77 or ARDEX X 77 W will produce about 19 litres of adhesive mortar. To apply a 1mm thick layer of adhesive, you’ll use around 1.05kg of powder per square metre. Actual coverage will depend on factors like the tile’s surface, the type of notched trowel used, and the application method. For example, with an 8mm x 8mm square notched trowel, one 20kg bag can cover up to 8 square metres.

Storage and Shelf Life: ARDEX X 77 and ARDEX X 77 W contain a special agent to control the level of Chromium VI in the adhesive when mixed. To ensure the product remains effective, store it in unopened bags in a cool, dry place, off the ground, and away from strong drafts. When stored correctly, it has a shelf life of 12 months from the date on the packaging. During this time, the reducing agent will ensure that when mixed, the product contains no more than 0.0002% (2ppm) of soluble Chromium VI. Do not use ARDEX X 77 or ARDEX X 77 W after the stated expiration date.

ARDEX X 77 is perfect for installing ceramic, fully vitrified tiles, and other low-porosity tiles like glass mosaics, porcelain mosaics, and terrazzo. The adhesive is certified under BS EN 12004 with a C2 TE S1 classification, meaning it offers improved performance, reduced tile slip, and extended working time. ARDEX X 77 and ARDEX X 77 W provide up to 60 minutes of open time—twice the industry requirement—and have double the slump resistance compared to standard adhesives. These qualities make them ideal for both indoor and outdoor tile installations, including challenging environments like swimming pools.

Surface Preparation: Before tiling, ensure surfaces are clean, solid, and free of dust, grease, or anything that might prevent proper adhesion. The surface must be strong enough to support the tile weight and properly dried according to BS 5385 standards. Prime the surface if needed before tiling. For ceramic tiles, the surface should be even, with no more than a 3mm gap under a 2m straight edge (Surface Regularity 1). ARDEX X 77 can be used on both dry and slightly moist surfaces, but moisture-sensitive materials must remain dry. In wet areas, use the ARDEX WPC Waterproof Protection System to safeguard against water damage.

Mixing: Mix ARDEX X 77 or ARDEX X 77 W powder with clean water in a clean container. Use a mixing paddle attached to a variable-speed electric drill for best results. The ratio is about 2 parts powder to 1 part water. A 20kg bag needs around 8.5 litres of water. Don’t exceed the maximum water amount. Adjust the consistency for your specific needs. Mix and apply the adhesive at temperatures above 5°C, and note that the mixed mortar has a pot life of approximately 3 hours at 20°C.

Application: Use a trowel to apply the mixed adhesive to the surface, then comb it with a notched trowel to create a ribbed bed. Press tiles into place within the adhesive’s 60-minute open time, using a twisting or sliding motion for good contact. For wall tiles in dry areas, ensure at least 50% of the tile’s back is covered in adhesive; for best results, aim for 80% coverage. For floors, wet areas, or external locations, butter the back of the tiles before placing them to eliminate voids. Choose the notched trowel size based on the tile size, surface, and desired coverage.

Grouting: Grout once the adhesive has hardened enough that tiles won’t move. Wall tiles are usually ready for grouting after 8 hours at 20°C, and floor tiles after 24 hours, depending on tile porosity and surface type. Adjust grouting times if temperatures are higher or lower. Use ARDEX-FLEX Tile Grout for most applications, or ARDEX EG 8 Cement/Epoxy Hybrid Grout for areas requiring chemical resistance and hygienic joints, like commercial kitchens.
