Before You Start
– Open all doors and windows to ensure good ventilation. Remove everything from your garage so you can access the entire floor. Clean off any oil and grease stains thoroughly before painting (heavy stains may require a specialist cleaner or degreaser).
How to prepare bare garage floors for painting
– New concrete must be left to cure for at least one month before painting. Clean the surface using a wire brush to remove dust and debris. Seal the floor using a stabilising solution, or dilute the first coat of paint with around 10% water to reduce the risk of cracking or blistering.
How to prepare previously painted garage floors
– Use a wire brush to remove loose dirt and dust from the surface. Then wipe the floor down with white spirit to ensure it is clean and ready for painting.
Application
– Stir the paint thoroughly before use. Apply using a large brush, roller or pad, starting at the far end of the garage and working towards the exit in small sections to avoid painting yourself into a corner. Apply two to three coats, allowing 4–6 hours between each coat. The floor will be fully hardened after 72 hours, after which vehicles and items can be moved back in. Clean tools with warm soapy water.
Aftercare
Cleaning
– Regular cleaning is usually not required, but any spills of oil, petrol or grease should be wiped up immediately to prevent staining.
Repair
– For damaged or worn areas, lightly prepare the surface and reapply two to three coats to restore protection and finish.
