BAL CTF4 is a polymer-modified, cementitious tile adhesive developed over 50 years, designed for walls and floors. With an extended open time of 30 minutes and a pot life of 5 hours, it is suitable for fixing ceramics, porcelain, vitrified tiles, mosaics, certain natural stones, terrazzo, rigid foam insulation, and brick slips in both dry and wet interior or exterior environments. Recommended for large-format wall tiles and showers, BAL CTF4 is highly water- and frost-resistant and provides improved performance characteristics such as reduced slip. It is suitable for bed thicknesses of 2–6mm and can be grouted after 16 hours, although translucent or water-sensitive natural stones should be avoided.
Key Points:
– Extended open time of 30 minutes and 5-hour pot life for flexibility during installation.
– Suitable for a wide range of tiles, mosaics, and some natural stones in dry or wet environments.
– Highly water- and frost-resistant, ideal for large-format tiles and showers.
– Bed thickness 2–6mm; groutable after 16 hours; avoid translucent or water-sensitive stones.
SHELF LIFE
12 months under normal dry conditions. Protect from frost and damp.

Use for
– Fixing ceramics, porcelain, vitrified tiles, mosaics, certain natural stones, terrazzo, rigid foam insulation, and brick slips in dry or wet interior and exterior environments.
Note: Certain natural stones (e.g., limestone, marble, travertine, some granites) may be prone to water staining. In such cases, a rapid-setting white adhesive like BAL RAPID-FLEX ONE is recommended. BAL CTF4 must not be used for translucent or water-sensitive stone.
– Recommended for large-format wall tiles.
– Suitable for showers.
Restrictions: NOT suitable for
– Metal, painted, glass/metal tiles with water-sensitive coating on the back, plywood walls, tiling over existing glazed tiles*, and areas of total immersion such as swimming pools*.
– Direct tiling to timber/plywood walls and floors.
Key
*Some applications are possible by adding BAL ADMIX AD1 to increase flexibility, adhesion, and reduce water permeability, allowing use on glazed surfaces.
MIXING
1. Use a BAL MIXING BUCKET or another suitable container.
2. Add approximately 3.5–4 parts powder to 1 part clean, cold water by weight. Do not exceed the recommended water, as this may cause shrinkage or de-bonding.
3. Mix thoroughly until a smooth, lump-free mortar is achieved.
4. Allow the mixture to stand for 2 minutes, then re-mix for 30 seconds. If using an electric drill mixer, blend at slow speed (under 300 rpm). Pot life at 20°C: approx. 2½ hours.
Note: Pot life and setting time vary slightly with temperature—higher temperatures shorten it, lower temperatures extend it.
5. Occasionally lift a mosaic/tile to check adhesive coverage. For solid bed fixing, ensure there are no voids behind tiles.
6. Maintain adequate joints between tiles and install movement joints in accordance with BS 5385, Parts 1–5.
7. Clean any surplus adhesive from tile surfaces and joints before it dries.
APPLICATION
BAL CTF4 tile adhesive can be applied to walls and floors using a suitable notched trowel. For larger format tiles, apply a thin layer of adhesive to the back of the tile (“back buttering”) to ensure full bedding. For thick applications (maximum 12mm), reduce mixing water to achieve proper slump resistance. Do not use thick adhesive beds with porous or soft-bodied tiles. When installing large format tiles, ensure the substrate is level to better than SR1 to avoid excessive bedding-out and reduce installation time.
Fixing Procedure
1. Apply adhesive to the wall or floor and comb to the required bed thickness, ensuring the adhesive ribs run in one direction. Typical bed thickness is 2–6mm, with up to 12mm in limited, localised areas (maximum 0.5m²). For large or heavily patterned tiles, apply additional adhesive to the tile reverse.
2. For mosaics: use a rubber tile float to press mosaics into the adhesive and adjust into position. For tiles: press firmly into the adhesive ribs with a slight twisting/sliding action to ensure full contact.
3. Fix mosaics/tiles before the adhesive forms a skin (usually within 30 minutes at 20°C, depending on surface porosity and conditions). If skin forms, remove adhesive and apply fresh material. Discard any adhesive that has begun to set. Do not add water to rework.
Grouting
1. Allow a minimum of 16 hours (at 20°C) after tile fixing before grouting. Use a suitable BAL cementitious grout, such as BAL MICROMAX3 ECO GROUT, or an epoxy grout like BAL ABSOLUTE GROUT. For paper-faced mosaics, pre-grout sheets and remove excess grout. Place sheets, tap down to achieve full contact, ensure tesserae joints are staggered, then wet and remove paper carefully before adhesive fully hardens. Clean surplus adhesive and grout from mosaic faces.
2. Fill movement joints with a suitable sealant, such as BAL MICROMAX SILICONE SEALANT. Do not use on sensitive surfaces that may react to acetic acid during curing. For intermediate movement joints, a more durable material like an epoxy polysulphide sealant or pre-formed movement joint strip may be required.
Important Notes
– For swimming pools, do not fill the pool for at least 3 weeks after grouting (contact BAL Technical Advisory for guidance).
– For showers, do not use the shower for at least 2 weeks, as required by the latest BS 5385: Part 4.
