BAL Primer 1C is a fast-drying red primer designed to stabilise and reduce the porosity of backgrounds before applying BAL Waterproof 1C. Suitable for use on plaster, fibre cement boards, and BAL Board (tiling side), it allows for rapid project progression with a drying time of just 15–30 minutes. The red colour makes coverage easy to see, and the primer can be applied easily with a brush, roller, or sponge. When used undiluted, it typically covers around 6 m² per litre, providing an efficient and reliable base for waterproofing.

Use for
– Preparing floor and wall tiling backgrounds prior to waterproofing with BAL WATERPROOF 1C.
– Suitable for interior dry and wet environments when used in combination with BAL WATERPROOF 1C.
– Provides stability to friable surfaces and reduces the porosity of absorbent backgrounds or bases.
Restrictions: NOT suitable for
– Metal or painted surfaces.
– Existing non-porous surfaces (e.g., glazed or porcelain tiles).
– Epoxy coatings and certain manufactured board systems (check with the manufacturer).
– Areas of total immersion, such as swimming pools.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Priming
BAL PRIMER 1C is suitable as a primer before tiling for the following surfaces:
– Plaster walls
– BAL Board
– Tilebacker boards
– Cement screeds, concrete, brick, and rendering
Some substrates may require priming on the board face. Always check the manufacturer’s recommendations for suitability and requirements.
MIXING
1. Shake the container thoroughly before use.
2. Use the primer undiluted unless otherwise specified for particular substrates.
APPLICATION/USAGE
Usage procedure
IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not use in temperatures below 5°C.
1. Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from dirt, grease, or loose materials. For highly polished surfaces, brush down with a stiff-bristle brush before priming.
2. Apply 1–2 coats of BAL PRIMER 1C using a clean brush, either diluted or undiluted depending on the substrate (see SURFACE PREPARATION). Allow each coat to dry before applying the next. Note: On floors, avoid puddling of the primer.
3. Ensure the primer is applied evenly across the surface.
4. Allow the primer to dry thoroughly for 15–30 minutes before applying adhesive.
5. Clean all tools with clean water immediately after use.
