Nitoseal PU12 is a two-part, elastomeric polyurethane joint sealant supplied with a base compound and curing agent in the correct proportions, which, when mixed, cure to form a tough, rubber-like material with excellent adhesion to most common construction materials. For porous surfaces, the use of Nitoseal MS2 Primer is essential to ensure proper bonding. In special cases, such as sealing sea defense works in tidal areas, a Nitoseal PU12 accelerator can be added during mixing to enhance the initial cure, allowing the seal to withstand tidal immersion within approximately 60 minutes at 10°C. The cured sealant is resistant to aerobic and anaerobic bacteriological attack, exhibits excellent adhesion under immersed conditions, and is highly abrasion resistant.
Key Points:
– Two-part polyurethane sealant that cures to a tough, rubber-like material with excellent adhesion.
– Nitoseal MS2 Primer is required for proper adhesion on porous surfaces.
– Optional accelerator allows rapid initial cure, enabling tidal immersion within ~60 minutes at 10°C.
– Resistant to bacteriological attack, abrasion, and performs well under immersed conditions.
Storage
Storage life of 12 months. Store in original containers in cool, dry conditions between 5°C and 27°C

Nitoseal PU12 is a two-part sealant specifically designed for the water industry, including water retaining structures, sewage treatment, and sea defence works. It is resistant to the bacteriological conditions found in sewage treatment and to silt accumulation in water storage, while its high abrasion resistance makes it suitable for sealing movement joints in concrete sea walls exposed to tidal scour. Typical applications include sludge digestion tanks, filtration and aeration tanks, culverts, raw water reservoirs, and sea walls.
Application Instructions
Joint Preparation
Joints must be accurately formed, dry, clean, and frost-free. Remove dust, dirt, weak laitance, old failed sealant, and any other contaminants. Ensure expansion joint fillers are tightly packed with no voids at the base of the sealing slot. Insert a self-adhesive polyethylene bond-breaking tape at the joint base (soft foam back-up material must not be used).
Priming
Prime the sides of the sealing slot with the appropriate Fosroc primer using a brush, working it thoroughly to ensure complete coverage. Porous substrates must be primed with Fosroc Primer MS2. Empty the hardener into the base tin, replace the lid, and shake thoroughly for at least 2 minutes. Apply primer to the joint face with a clean, dry brush, avoiding over-application that may create puddles at the bottom.
Sealant Application
Apply Nitoseal PU12 between 30 minutes and 4 hours after priming. Avoid excess primer that can pool at the base of the joint. If a joint remains unsealed for more than 4 hours, remove the primer by grit blasting or grinding and re-prime the joint before sealing.
Mixing
Add the curing agent to the base component tin and mix thoroughly using a slow-speed drill (300–500 rpm) fitted with a Fosroc Sealant Mixing Paddle. Mix for 3 minutes, then scrape the sides and bottom of the tin with a spatula and continue mixing for an additional 2 minutes. Ensure all material, including that at the bottom of the tin, is fully incorporated for proper curing. In cold conditions, Nitoseal PU12 mixes more easily if stored at room temperature overnight. If using the Nitoseal PU12 accelerator, stir it well before adding to the base and curing agent. Continue mixing for at least 4 minutes until a uniform, streak-free colour is achieved.
Application
Load the thoroughly mixed Nitoseal PU12 into a Fosroc ‘G’ gun using a Follower Plate. Compact the sealant into the primed joint and tool off to leave a smooth, even finish.
Finishing
Tool the surface of Nitoseal PU12 using a metal or wooden spatula, with a minimal amount of detergent if necessary to ease the operation. Remove all masking tapes immediately after tooling. Avoid excessive tooling, which can cause surface drag.
Cleaning
Clean all equipment immediately after use with Fosroc Equipment Cleaner.
