ME501 VV is a high-strength, tear-resistant membrane made from polyethylene copolymer film with a durable non-woven fleece and integral self-adhesive strips, providing a simple, solvent-free solution for achieving reliable airtight and weathertight seals around windows in both domestic and commercial applications. It can be installed before or after window fitting to suit site sequencing, with split release liners allowing accurate positioning and strong adhesion to most construction substrates. Tested to EN1026 and EN1027 and compliant with RAL Quality Assurance recommendations, ME501 VV offers intelligent moisture management through its variable sd value, excellent UV resistance for up to 12 months, and reduced application risk—particularly at corners—while remaining fully compatible with illbruck Building Protection Membranes.
Key points:
– High-strength, tear-resistant membrane with self-adhesive backing for easy, solvent-free installation
– Provides airtight and weathertight performance, tested to EN1026 and EN1027
– Variable sd value supports intelligent moisture management and wall drying
– UV stable for up to 12 months and compatible with illbruck Building Protection Membranes
ME501 VV is supplied on 25m rolls.

Suitable for:
– Provides high-performance internal and external seal for window/curtain wall perimeter joints
– Intelligent variable vapour permeability (sd value) ensures compliance with “inside tighter than outside” principles
– Self-adhesive backing allows quick and reliable adhesion to window and construction substrates
– Ideal for use with ME508 Duo Membrane EW/F as external weather-tight and internal airtight seal
Preparation
– ME501 VV adheres effectively to masonry, concrete, PVC, metal, wood, and solid or laminated insulation materials.
– Ensure all adhesive bond zones are dry and free from oil, grease, dust, or other anti-adhesive contaminants. Clean surfaces with AW115, AW414, or AW421 Cleaner, taking care not to damage sensitive substrates.
Primer
– ME501 VV can often be applied without a primer, but for optimal results, use ME901 or AT140 paint-on primers.
– Use AT140 primer for application at temperatures below 5°C, on friable substrates (observe flash-off time), or in slightly damp conditions.
– Suitable for bonding to EPS/XPS thermal breaks and specialized EPS/XPS building systems such as Nudura Block. For added protection, use ME904 solvent-free acrylic copolymer primer if necessary.
– Always follow the technical and safety datasheets of the primers used.
Application
– Bond ME501 VV to the weather sheathing board or similar weather line of the wall behind the external skin. If a breather membrane exists, cut back to allow direct bonding to the sheathing board. Ensure surfaces are free of debris, excess silicone, or fire-rated compounds, which can block adhesion.
– Apply AT140 Primer on silicone-sealed or fire-rated compound joints. Consult CPG UK for special preparation advice if needed.
Attachment to the Window
– Most applications involve first applying ME501 VV to the projecting window profile. Clean the frame, measure, and pre-cut the membrane to match sill, jambs, and head dimensions, including overlap equal to the membrane width.
– Dry fit the membrane, mark the front edge, and fold it under the sill at a 90° angle. Position the remaining membrane against the sheathing board or concrete at 90°.
– Use a straight edge or laser level to mark the termination line on the substrate.
– Remove the narrow release liner on the non-printed face, position the self-adhesive strip on the sill, ensuring a minimum of 20mm contact.
Attachment to the Wall
– Remove the wide dual release liners one at a time. Bond the membrane at 90° to the sheathing board or substrate, using your guide line for a neat finish. The membrane should form an “L” shape, with unbonded extensions at either end resembling a tube.
– For dual release liners: remove the liner adjacent to the narrow strip first, bed and bond, then remove the second liner and bond.
