ME901 Butyl & Bitumen Primer is a brush-applied polymer solution designed for use with illbruck butyl and bitumen tapes and membranes. It enhances adhesion on cold or damp surfaces, stabilises unsound substrates, and improves weathersealing on porous materials. The primer dries quickly and can be applied in temperatures as low as -5°C, making it ideal for challenging site conditions.
Key Points:
– Improves adhesion of tapes and membranes on cold or damp surfaces
– Stabilises unsound or porous substrates
– Quick-drying for fast application
– Suitable for use down to -5°C
Storage – Store in shaded dry conditions between +5°C and 25°C
Shelf Life – 6 months when stored as recommended in original unopened containers

Suitable as a pre-treatment bonding agent and primer when working with illbruck butyl and bitumen tapes and membranes.
Preparation
– No special preparation is required, but surfaces should be sound.
– Best results are achieved on dry, dust-free, and grease-free surfaces.
– Remove paint residues and impregnating agents from the adhesion surface.
Application
1. Use only above -5°C.
2. Apply evenly and carefully; mask adjoining surfaces if needed.
3. Protect primed surfaces from dust and moisture.
4. Store the product with the packaging properly closed.
5. Tape or membrane can be applied after ~10 minutes at 20°C or ~40 minutes at -5°C.
6. Consolidate the bond using a seam roller once applied.
Coverage
– Dependent on substrate porosity; rough, porous surfaces will reduce coverage.
– For a 40 mm wide application strip, 1 litre yields approximately 100–200 linear metres.
Cleaning
– Remove splashes or spills immediately. Mask and protect adjacent surfaces.
Please Note
– ME901 Butyl & Bitumen Primer cannot be over-painted as it may dissolve paints, varnishes, and some plastics; compatibility testing is recommended.
– Performance may vary depending on conditions and materials; always test suitability for your specific application.
