Suitable for exterior doors and windows
Before you start
– You need to sand your wood before applying the varnish, so always wear a mask to avoid inhaling dust.
How to prepare stained or varnished wood
– To ensure Crystal Clear Varnish adheres properly, sand doors or windows using 120 grit sandpaper in a circular motion to remove the existing stain or varnish. Once complete, wipe the surface with white spirit and a cloth to remove dust and leave it clean.
How to prepare new wood for varnishing
– New wood should be lightly sanded with 120 grit sandpaper to remove any surface imperfections before varnishing. Then wipe away dust using white spirit and a cloth, leaving the surface clean and ready for application.
Application
– Stir the tin thoroughly to ensure an even consistency, then apply the varnish with a brush in the direction of the grain. Leave six hours between coats, and although it is rainproof after one hour, three coats are recommended. Lightly sand before the third coat for a smooth finish, then apply the final coat and allow it to dry.
Aftercare
Cleaning
– Once dry, the varnished surface can be cleaned as normal. Regularly wipe away dirt and grime to maintain a fresh finish, and wash brushes in warm soapy water.
Repair
– If damage occurs, simply sand the affected area and reapply the varnish following the same steps to restore the finish.
