Before You Start
– Apply on dry days with temperatures above 10 °C and ensure the decking is completely dry before starting.
How to Prepare Decking for Oiling
Untreated, Weathered Decking
– Use a decking restorer to revive the natural colour and improve oil adhesion.
Previously Treated Decking
– Clean with a decking cleaner to remove dirt, grease, mildew, and algae.
– Remove any loose, peeling, or flaking coatings using a decking stripper to expose bare wood.
– Protect exposed ends with a grain protector to prevent moisture ingress.
– Strip dark oils before applying lighter colours to avoid uneven results.
New Wood
– Clean with a decking cleaner and reviver or allow to weather for six months.
– Rinse thoroughly, ideally with a pressure washer.
– Check for remaining treatments by sprinkling water—if it beads, repeat cleaning.
– Allow the wood to dry fully before application.
Application
1. Shake the can well and pour into a suitable container. Test the colour on a hidden area before use.
2. Apply from the furthest corner, brushing along the length of the boards and working on 3–4 boards at a time to avoid overlap marks.
3. Apply two coats, allowing 4 hours between coats.
4. Leave for 24 hours before placing furniture back on the deck.
5. Clean any oil from skin with warm soapy water.
Aftercare
Cleaning
Regularly clean decking with a stiff brush to remove dirt, algae, mildew, and debris to maintain appearance and condition.
Repairs
Sand damaged areas and reapply oil to restore the finish and protection.
