Sika® Black Jack®-901 Black Bitumen Paint provides a durable, waterproof, weather-resistant, and corrosion-protective coating. It is resistant to low concentrations of alkalis and acids and can withstand prolonged oxidation. The paint is suitable for a wide range of materials, including iron, steel, lead, zinc, aluminium, asbestos-cement, concrete, stone, wood, felt, and brick. It is primarily used for protecting metal surfaces such as corrugated iron sheets, fire escapes, stairways, ladders, storage tanks, gutters, downpipes, fences, railings, and gates; for coating concrete structures, stone, brick, screeds, and sand/cement surfaces; and for overcoating felt or wood.
LIMITATIONS
Do not use in areas where surfaces may later come into contact with solvents. The product is not suitable for potable drinking water tanks. Avoid inhaling vapours in confined spaces, and allow sufficient drying time between coats. Bitumen paint may bleed through subsequent paint layers, so always apply a primer recommended by the paint manufacturer before overpainting. Note that Black Jack® 902 Bitumen & Flashing Primer is not rust-inhibitive and should not be used on rusting metal; instead, use a red lead oxide, zinc phosphate, or similar primer. Always test compatibility before use.
ECOLOGY, HEALTH AND SAFETY
Users must consult the most recent Safety Data Sheets (SDS) before using any products. The SDS provides guidance on safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemical products, including physical, ecological, toxicological, and other safety-related information.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
All surfaces must be dry, stable, and thoroughly cleaned of dirt, dust, and grease. Wet surfaces should be brushed and wiped dry. Repair cracks and holes with Black Jack® 903 Bitumen Trowel Mastic, and secure loose felt with Black Jack® 904 Roof Felt Adhesive. Wire-brush metal surfaces to remove rust, and for long-term protection, treat with a rust-inhibitive primer such as red lead or zinc phosphate. Remove loose or blistered paint, including tar-based systems. Roughen new galvanised surfaces with a wire brush or apply a suitable etch primer. Prime porous surfaces such as concrete or cement with Black Jack® 902 Bitumen & Flashing Primer and allow to dry. Remove any algae or moss using Sika® Mouldbuster before proceeding.
APPLICATION
Sika® Black Jack®-901 Black Bitumen Paint is ready for use and should not be thinned. Stir thoroughly before application and apply by brush or spray. Apply a minimum of two coats, allowing the first coat to dry (typically 2–4 hours, depending on weather) before applying the second. For enhanced UV protection, apply Black Jack® 907 Solar Reflective Paint after the 901 Black Bitumen Paint has dried.
CLEANING OF TOOLS
Clean all tools immediately after use with Sika® Wonder Wipes or white spirit. Wipe off any spillage before the bitumen paint sets.
