Suitable for
▪ bonding all types of roofing felts to metal, concrete,
roofing felt, wood.
▪ Sealing roofing felt laps.
▪ Bonding chippings to final layer of felt.
LIMITATIONS
Do not use in areas where surfaces may later come into contact with solvents, and avoid inhaling vapours in confined spaces. On timber roof structures, the first layer of felt must be nailed down, with subsequent layers bonded using Sika® Black Jack®-904 Bitumen Roof Felt Adhesive. Always test compatibility before use. As the manufacturer cannot anticipate all possible uses, it is the user’s responsibility to determine suitability. If in doubt, contact the Technical Services Department for advice.
ECOLOGY, HEALTH AND SAFETY
Users must consult the most recent Safety Data Sheets (SDS) before using any products. The SDS provides guidance on safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemical products, including physical, ecological, toxicological, and other safety-related information.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
All surfaces must be dry, stable, and thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, dust, and grease. Wet surfaces should be brushed and wiped dry. Repair cracks and holes with Black Jack® 903 Bitumen Trowel Mastic, and secure loose felt with Sika® Black Jack®-904 Roof Felt Adhesive. Wire-brush metal surfaces to remove rust, and apply a rust-inhibitive primer such as red lead or zinc phosphate for long-term protection. Remove loose or blistered paint, including tar-based systems. Roughen new galvanised surfaces or treat with a suitable etch primer. Prime concrete, cement, and other porous surfaces with Black Jack® 902 Bitumen & Flashing Primer and allow to dry. Remove algae and moss using Sika® Mouldbuster where necessary.
APPLICATION
Stir the adhesive thoroughly before and during use. Apply by brush or mop and leave “open” for 15–30 minutes to develop tackiness. Carefully place the felt into the adhesive, ensuring full contact and eliminating air pockets, then weight it down until fully adhered. Whenever possible, unroll the felt into the adhesive and roll with a light roller (~25 kg).
AS A LAP CEMENT
Edge laps should be at least 75 mm wide and roll-end laps at least 150 mm. Treat the underside of laps and edges liberally with adhesive and compact thoroughly.
TIMBER ROOFS
On timber structures, nail down the first felt layer, then bond subsequent layers with Sika® Black Jack®-904 Bitumen Roof Felt Adhesive.
CONCRETE AND LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE SCREEDS
Prime highly porous surfaces with Black Jack® 902 Bitumen & Flashing Primer, ensuring the primer is fully dry before applying the first felt layer.
AFTERCARE
Check adhesion 24 hours after laying, paying special attention to laps. Press or roll any felt showing incomplete bonding.
AS A COLD-GRITTING SOLUTION
Suitable for roofs up to a 10° slope. Ensure surfaces are clean, free of debris, and preferably dry. Spread the adhesive evenly in 20 m² areas, then apply chippings immediately, ensuring full coverage. Allow the surface dressing to cure for at least 72 hours, then brush off any excess. Avoid leaving black adhesive film exposed.
CLEANING OF TOOLS
Clean all tools immediately after use with Sika® Wonder Wipes or white spirit. Wipe off any spillage before the bitumen sets.
