Sikaceram-282 is suitable for use on concrete, sand/cement screeds, tile backer boards, cement-faced fibre boards, plaster, and plasterboard. It is ideal for fixing ceramic, mosaic, porcelain, vitrified, and stone tiles.
APPLICATION
Surface Preparation
All surfaces must be clean, firm, and free of dust, dirt, oil, and loose coatings. They should also be structurally sound and able to withstand expected traffic loads.
Concrete, Screeds, Renders, Unskimmed Plasterboard, and Block Work
Rough or uneven surfaces, such as tamp-rutted concrete or masonry blockwork, should be prepared with a suitable Sikafloor Self-Levelling Compound and allowed to cure for 24-48 hours before tiling.
Timber/Wood-Based Floors
Wood-based surfaces, including plywood and tongue-and-groove floorboards, should be dry and sealed on all exposed faces before priming with a 1:1 dilution of SikaBond SBR+ and water. To create a stable tiling surface, overlay timber boarding with tile backer boards, screw-fixing them at 300 mm centres as per BS 5385 Part 1. Leave a 0.5-1 mm gap between boards for expansion.
Existing Tiling
Ensure existing tiles are securely bonded. Roughen glazed surfaces using a sander and apply a bonding coat of neat SikaBond SBR+ before applying mixed adhesive while the bonding coat is still tacky.
Gypsum Plaster or Anhydrite
Prime unsealed gypsum or anhydrite floors with two coats of SikaBond SBR+:
- First coat: 1:1 dilution with water
- Second coat: Neat application
Mixing
Always add powder to water. Mix 20 kg of SikaCeram-282 Fibre Reinforced with approximately 5.5 litres of clean water to form a smooth, slump-free mortar. Adjust consistency with slight water additions only during mixing. Never add extra water once the adhesive starts setting, as this compromises bond strength.
Application
Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and dust-free before application. Use a notched trowel to spread the adhesive evenly, ensuring full tile contact using a twist and slide action.
Recommended Trowel Notches:
- 3 mm x 3 mm (6 mm centres): Mosaics and thin flat-backed wall tiles
- 5 mm x 5 mm (10 mm centres): General wall tiling
- 10 mm x 10 mm (16 mm centres): General floor tiling
SikaCeram-282 remains workable for up to 4 hours, depending on site conditions. If a skin forms on the adhesive, remove and reapply fresh adhesive. Check for at least 75% tile coverage by periodically lifting a tile.
Remove excess adhesive while wet using a damp cloth or sponge, particularly in grout lines. Grouting can begin after 24 hours, though this may take longer in cold conditions. Once fully set, grout wall and floor joints with SikaCeram CleanGrout.
Subfloor Heating
For heated floors, allow the adhesive to cure for 2-3 weeks before gradually increasing the temperature by 2°C per day until reaching full operating temperature.
Cleaning
Wash tools with water immediately after use. Clean hands promptly after handling the product.
Limitations
- Always mix with clean, fresh water and prime/bond surfaces as directed.
- Do not exceed the recommended water quantity, as it weakens the adhesive.
- Avoid application when temperatures are below 5°C or above 35°C within the first 24 hours.
- Do not apply on damp surfaces or at persistent temperatures below 15°C, as it will slow curing.
- Only mix as much adhesive as can be used within 4 hours. Never reconstitute once set.
- Ensure subfloors are properly prepared, free from movement, and at least 4 weeks old before tiling.
- Not suitable for unsealed gypsum plaster (see priming instructions).
- Do not use on painted surfaces (remove paint first) or metal surfaces.
- Do not walk on floors until the adhesive has fully set (approximately 24 hours).
- For underfloor heating, turn heating off 24 hours before and after installation.
- When used externally, protect from rain for at least 24 hours after application.
- Avoid allowing adhesive residues to set on tile surfaces.
As the manufacturer cannot predict all applications, users must determine product suitability for their specific needs. If unsure, consult Technical Services for guidance.
