Ronseal One Coat Shed & Fence Tudor Black 5L is used to protect and enhance outdoor wooden surfaces such as sheds, fences, trellis, summerhouses, and other rough-sawn or smooth timber. It is designed to provide long-lasting colour and weather protection in just one coat, helping to guard wood against rain, sun, and general wear. The formula penetrates the wood to prevent cracking and peeling while delivering a rich Tudor Black finish that improves the appearance of garden structures and keeps them looking smart and well-maintained for years.
How to apply

Prepare the surface: Make sure the wood is clean, dry, and free of old paint, stain or debris (brush or pressure wash and allow to dry).

Choose the right day: Apply when the temperature is above ~10 °C and it’s dry — cold, wet conditions stop the stain from drying properly.

You can brush or spray the paint onto the wood surface.

Coverage for a 5 L tub is about 6 m² per litre (so a 5 L tub will cover roughly 6 fence panels).

Drying:

100 % shower-proof in ~1 hour after application.

Fully dry in about 4 hours (depending on weather).

Re-coating: This product is designed to work in just one coat on most surfaces, but if you’re covering a very contrasting existing colour or rougher wood, a second coat can improve coverage.
Limitations / When it isn’t appropriate
1. Wood type & surface prep
-
It’s formulated specifically for wood — it may not bond well or provide intended protection on non-wood substrates (e.g., concrete posts or metal) without a primer or suitable product.

The wood must be clean and dry before application. Painting onto dirt, mould, fresh pressure-washed wood (wet) or untreated rough surfaces without cleaning can prevent good adhesion.
2. Weather & conditions

Cold, wet weather (below ~10 °C) or rain soon after application can stop drying or wash the coating off before it sets.

Although it’s “one coat,” heavily weathered or unfinished wood might still benefit from a second coat for full protection.
3. Spray equipment

If using a sprayer, ensure it’s compatible; some fence paints can clog standard sprayers not designed for heavier liquids (this is general for the One Coat range — follow manufacturer guidance).
4. Not a structural preservative

While it helps protect against moisture and discolouration, it’s not a full structural wood preservative against severe rot, woodworm or deep decay. For untreated or damaged wood at risk of rot, a dedicated wood preserver is recommended instead (e.g., a fungicidal preserver).
5. Coverage expectations

Coverage figures are approximate (~6 m² per litre / ~30 m² per 5 L), and achieving full coverage with a single coat may depend on wood texture and porosity.
