SikaBond® SBR is a styrene-butadiene co-polymer with versatile applications as an admixture, primer, bonding agent, and sealer in areas exposed to humidity, dampness, or direct water contact. It enhances the water resistance, durability, and flexibility of cement and concrete mixes, making it ideal for renderings, floor screeds, and general bonding or repair works. Containing anti-foam to control mix density, SikaBond® SBR can be used for concrete repair, external rendering, tanking mortars, corrosion protection of steel, silage pit lining, and as a primer or sealer in tiling. It also improves workability, reduces surface dusting, and offers resistance to water, salts, chemicals, mineral oils, frost, and abrasion.
Key Points:
– Enhances adhesion, water resistance, flexibility, and toughness of cementitious mixes.
– Suitable for concrete repair, external rendering, tanking mortars, corrosion protection, and silage pits.
– Can be used as a primer, sealer, bonding agent, and admixture for screeds, renders, and tile adhesives.
– Provides resistance to water, salts, chemicals, frost, abrasion, and improves durability and workability of mixes.
Shelf Life – 12 months from date of manufacture when stored according to manufacturer’s instructions in original, unopened containers.
Storage Conditions – SikaBond® SBR is best stored at moderate temperatures (+5 to +30 °C) to avoid the possibility of permanent damage occurring due to prolonged
heat or excessive cold. The product should be thawed slowly if frozen. SikaBond® SBR should preferably be stirred before use. SikaBond® SBR contains sufficient bactericide to preserve the product under normal storage conditions.

– Enhances concrete repair applications.
– Improves performance of external renderings.
– Prepares mortar for waterproofing and tanking.
– Provides corrosion protection for steel structures.
– Suitable for lining and protection of silage pits.
– Acts as an admixture for mortar, screeds, and renders.
– Serves as a bonding agent for screeds and renders.
– Functions as a primer and sealer in tiling applications, recommended for exterior use unlike most PVA bonding aids.
– Acts as a flexibiliser for cement-based tile adhesives when tiling on wooden or asphalt floors.
LIMITATIONS
SikaBond® SBR is not suitable for coloured exterior decorative renders that will remain unpainted, as its poor UV resistance may cause discolouration.
ECOLOGY, HEALTH AND SAFETY
Users must consult the most recent Safety Data Sheets (SDS) before use. The SDS contains guidance on safe handling, storage, disposal, and other safety-related information.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
SUBSTRATE QUALITY / PRE-TREATMENT
Ensure all surfaces are sound, clean, and free of dirt, dust, grease, or flaking paint/render. Agitate SikaBond® SBR before use. Porous substrates should be primed with 1 part SikaBond® SBR diluted with up to 3 parts water and allowed to dry. For concrete repair, brick slip, or tile fixing mortars, prepare the surface to provide a gripping profile.
MIXING
Mix SikaBond® SBR with cement and aggregates similar to conventional mixes, replacing part of the gauging water with SBR. Use a forced action mixer: pre-mix sand and cement, add SBR and mix for 1–3 minutes, then slowly add water to achieve the required consistency. Avoid over-adding water, as it will thin the mix due to SBR’s plasticising effect. Typical 12 mm screed/topping mix (by volume):
Screed: OPC 1, Moist Sand 3.5, SBR 0.2 (10 L per 50 kg cement), water as required
Topping: OPC 1, Moist Sand 1.75, 3 mm Granite 1.75, SBR 0.2, water as required
APPLICATION METHOD / TOOLS
PRIMING
Apply a primer coat to ensure maximum adhesion of the topping or screed.
FLOORING APPLICATIONS
Adding SikaBond® SBR to screeds or toppings provides:
Low water:cement ratio for quicker overcoating
Reduced permeability to liquids, improved chemical, abrasion, and impact resistance
Dust resistance and excellent slip resistance
Thinner screeds, reducing weight and saving materials
SELECTION OF MATERIALS
Use high-quality materials for best performance: well-washed sharp sand, compatible cement (Portland, High Alumina, sulphate-resisting), and clean coarse aggregates. Avoid air-entraining agents and cement with air-set lumps.
POT LIFE
The mix has a pot life of ~30 minutes; batch sizes should be planned accordingly.
APPLICATION
– Apply topping or screed onto wet or tacky primer.
– Compact, level with screed bar, and finish with a steel float. Finish while work proceeds.
– Cure for 1–2 days using conventional methods, starting curing quickly after application.
NOTES
Screed/topping joints should align with background joints.
Prefer ambient temperatures below +25 °C for easier laying.
Avoid oleoresinous floor finishes if overcoating.
If water repellents are present, consider using an epoxy primer instead of SBR/cement primer.
CLEANING OF TOOLS
Clean tools immediately with water. Hardened SikaBond® SBR toppings and screeds are difficult to remove; use white spirit with coarse wire wool if necessary.
