APPLICATION/USAGE

Trowel Recommendations
– Internal Dry Wall (up to 300x300mm tiles): Max 6mm Notched Trowel
– Internal Wet Wall (up to 300x300mm tiles): Max 6mm Notched Solid Bed Trowel
– Mosaics (up to 100x100mm tiles): Min 4mm Notched Trowel
Note: Ensure correct adhesive coverage in line with BS 5385, Parts 1–5.
Fixing Procedure
1. Apply adhesive to the surface and comb to required bed thickness, keeping ribs in one direction. For large or patterned tiles, apply additional adhesive to the tile reverse (max 3mm).
2. For mosaics, press sheets into adhesive with a rubber float, aligning tesserae. For tiles, press firmly with slight twisting/sliding to ensure full contact.
3. Fix tiles before adhesive skins. If skin forms, remove and apply fresh adhesive.
4. Check coverage: min. 75% for dry areas, 100% for wet areas.
5. Leave adequate joints between tiles unless using self-spacing tiles.
6. Install movement joints per BS 5385, Parts 1–5.
7. Remove surplus adhesive from tile faces and joints before drying.
Grouting
1. Allow tiles to set a minimum of 24 hours at 20°C before grouting. On impervious surfaces, delay for at least 3 days. Follow BS Standards for joint sizes (min 2mm walls). Contact BAL Technical Advisory Service for advice.
2. Fill movement joints and seal around baths/showers with BAL Micromax Sealant. Avoid surfaces sensitive to acetic acids. Do not use showers for at least 2 weeks after grouting, per BS 5385 Part 4.
