SURFACE PREPARATION
General
Before grouting, ensure that:
– Tile adhesive has fully cured, following the instructions on the adhesive packaging or BAL TECHNICAL DATA SHEET.
– Open joints are free from excess adhesive, clean, dry, and protected from contamination or loose debris.
– Consistent use of clean, cold water is maintained when mixing cement-based grout over larger areas to ensure uniform colour.
– Lighting during installation should closely match the final lighting conditions to check grout colour, and verify colour consistency when using the same grout across different tile types (e.g., porous stone vs. porcelain).
IMPORTANT NOTE: Do NOT use in temperatures below 5°C or on damp surfaces.
MIXING
Use a BAL MIXING BUCKET or suitable container:
1. Slowly add approximately 5 parts powder to 1 part clean cold water by weight (see table). Do not exceed the recommended water ratio, as this may cause colour inconsistencies.
2. Mix until a lump-free mortar is achieved.
3. Allow the mixed grout to rest for 2–3 minutes, then re-mix for 30 seconds. Do not add additional water. Avoid excessive mixing speed to prevent air entrapment.
APPLICATION
Grouting procedure
– Test for potential staining by applying grout to a small trial area. If discolouration occurs or removal is difficult, treat tiles with BAL PROTECTIVE SEALER and repeat the trial.
– Work in small sections using a grout float or squeegee. Fully fill the joints and compact the grout, removing excess from the tile surface as you go.
– Allow approximately 15 minutes (at 20°C) for the grout surface to dry enough to touch (not fully cured).
– Clean the surface diagonally to grout lines with a damp sponge or sponge board, using minimal water and frequently rinsing the sponge. Do not allow water to enter un-grouted joints.
– Once grout has set sufficiently, polish the tile surface with a dry cloth.
– Remove any remaining haze the next day using water and a white emulsifying pad with a gripper.
– Wait at least 24 hours before exposing tiles to normal use.
NOTE:
For swimming pools, do not fill for at least 3 weeks after grouting (consult BAL TECHNICAL ADVISORY AND SPECIFICATION SERVICE).
For showers, do not use for at least 2 weeks.
CLEANING
Use cleaning products suitable for the tile type. For long-term protection, regularly clean using a general alkaline cleaner such as BAL MICROSHIELD TILE CLEANER with Microban® antimicrobial protection.
