Data Sheets
BAL Rapid-Mat is an advanced fast-track uncoupling membrane designed to accommodate lateral movement in tile installations on floors with limited movement. With only 1mm thickness, it reduces adhesive consumption compared to traditional systems, is lightweight, easy to handle, and ideal for both renovation and new construction projects in domestic and commercial settings. Particularly suitable for heated and timber floors, BAL Rapid-Mat protects against cracks, fractures, and other damage while offering a cost- and time-efficient solution. Available by the roll or metre, it sets a new standard for fail-safe uncoupling systems, providing enhanced performance with minimal mat compression.
Key Points:
– Accommodates lateral movement and protects against floor damage.
– Lightweight, easy to install, with minimal 1mm height build-up.
– Reduces adhesive use by 20% versus cavity mat systems.
– Suitable for internal, renovation, new construction, heated, and timber floors.
Can be stored for approx. 24 months in dry rooms, away from direct sunlight.

Use for
– Installing ceramic and porcelain tiles, slabs, natural stone, and concrete pavers.
– Reducing tension stresses between the substrate and floor to minimise cracking.
– Preventing reflective cracks from shrinkage, board joints, and lateral movement.
– Providing crack bridging for safe installation on challenging or uneven substrates.
– Suitable for internal flooring in renovations or new builds, including domestic and commercial medium/heavy duty areas.
– Ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, heated floors, and timber subfloors.
Restrictions: NOT suitable for
– Exterior environments or permanently wet areas.
– Substrates prone to deflection or vertical movement.
– Parquet flooring or bridging existing movement joints.
APPLICATION
1. Ensure the substrate is even, level, and capable of bearing the load.
2. If required, prime the floor with BAL PRIME APD or level it using a suitable BAL smoothing and levelling compound, such as BAL LEVEL MAX.
3. Roll out BAL RAPID-MAT from a corner and cut to the required length and size. Trim any excess around up-stands using scissors or a utility knife.
4. Apply a thin bed of a suitable BAL flexible tile adhesive to the substrate using a 4 mm notched trowel to bond the mat.
5. Lay the BAL RAPID-MAT into the wet adhesive, ensuring it is fully engaged and applied within the adhesive’s open time. If the adhesive has started to skin, remove it and re-apply a fresh layer.
6. Smooth the mat with the flat edge of a steel trowel or float to remove air pockets and ensure full adhesion.
7. When using multiple rolls, butt joint the mats at the edges without overlapping. Remove any excess adhesive squeezed through the joints. Note: Always separate the matting where there is a change in substrate or a construction/movement joint, and continue the joint through to the finished tiles.
8. Mix and apply tile adhesive to the mat using a minimum 10 mm notched trowel. For large-format tiles, a 20 mm notched trowel may be used, but the final adhesive bed must not exceed 6 mm over the mat.
9. If using a BAL flexible rapid-setting adhesive, tiles can be applied immediately.
10. Apply adhesive and tiles carefully to avoid de-bonding the mat.
11. Follow all adhesive manufacturer instructions and applicable industry standards for tile fixing.
