Data Sheets
BAL Board is a specialist magnesium oxide tile backer board with BBA approval, providing a strong, stable and durable background for wall and floor tiling. Water and mould resistant, it will not swell or deteriorate over time, while still supporting loads of up to 100kg/m² despite being lightweight and easy to handle with minimal dust. Around 15–35% lighter than traditional cement-based boards, BAL Board is simple to store, cut and install without specialist tools or fixings, producing minimal dust for a safer working environment. Highly rated by fixers in end-user trials, it is fully backed by BAL’s 25-year guarantee and offers thermal resistance, making it suitable for use with underfloor heating systems.

SURFACE PREPARATION
GENERAL
– Ensure surfaces are flat, clean, sound, and free from contamination.
– Studwork should be made from seasoned timber or a suitable proprietary framework at maximum 300mm centres, vertically and horizontally.
– When screw fixing BAL BOARD, use stainless steel or galvanized screws, ensuring no fixings protrude. On walls, position fixings at least 15mm from edges and 20mm from corners. Start fixing from the centre and work outwards to prevent distortion. Leave a 6mm gap above finished floor level to allow for frame settling or movement. All fixings should be flush with the board surface.
– For cementitious adhesives, prime the rough face of BAL BOARD with BAL PRIME APD (diluted 1:1 with water) and allow to dry before taping joints. No priming is needed for BAL WHITE STAR PLUS.
– For heavy-weight coverings, use additional fixings or anchors.
– Reinforce all board joints with BAL SCRIM TAPE before tiling.
– Tiling can commence once all preparation is complete.
WET AREAS
Waterproof the background with BAL TANK-IT or BAL WATERPROOF 1C. Fill voids or gaps over 1mm with a suitable filler, adhesive, or sealant, and allow to cure.
FALLS & DRAINAGE
The floor substrate must be laid to correct falls as per BS 5385: Part 4, with gradients between 1:80 (minimum) and 1:35 (maximum). Ensure the drainage rate of the gulley/drain exceeds the flow rate of the water source (e.g., shower head).
