XL Floor One is a high-performance floor tile adhesive specially formulated for fixing XL or large-format tiles in both dry and wet interior and exterior environments. Its extended open and working times allow for larger mixes and longer runs without the risk of the adhesive setting too quickly.
XL Floor One has a bed thickness of up to 25mm in a single application, it is ideal for patch repairs and levelling small areas, while its improved formulation often removes the need for back-buttering on flat surfaces. Suitable for a wide range of substrates, including difficult or uneven backgrounds, XL Floor One is especially recommended for natural stone and large-format tiles like slate, providing strong adhesion and the ability to grout in as little as six hours.

Use For
– Fixing large and small format ceramics, porcelain, vitrified tiles, most natural stones, and terrazzo in dry or wet interior and exterior environments
– For fixing agglomerate stone*, consult the BAL Technical Advisory and Specification Service
– Recommended for large-format tiles, uneven thickness tiles/slabs (e.g., slate), and areas of total water immersion such as swimming pool bases and wet room floors
– Suitable for patch repairs and levelling small areas
– Ideal for installations subject to limited movement or vibration
– Compatible with heated screeds
Restrictions / Not Suitable For
– Metal, painted surfaces, existing glazed tiles*, and all wall substrates/backgrounds
– Tiling directly onto timber or plywood walls and floors
General
Ensure all surfaces to be tiled are flat, clean, dry, sound, and free from contaminants or any barriers that could affect adhesion.
Surface Regularity
Surface regularity refers to the deviation in height of a flooring layer over short distances in a local area—in simpler terms, it is the “flatness” or unevenness of the screeded surface.
Wet Areas
For wet areas, ensure the background is waterproofed using BAL Tank-IT or BAL Waterproof 1C.
External Tiling
When tiling externally, protect the installation from adverse weather during fixing, grouting, and for as long as possible afterward. For direct-to-earth subfloors, a Damp Proof Membrane (DPM) is recommended, or a surface DPM can be applied prior to tiling if required. Mixing
Use a BAL mixing bucket or another suitable clean container.
1. Add approximately 5 parts powder to 1 part clean cold water by weight (see table for guidance). Do not exceed the recommended water amount, as this may cause shrinkage or de-bonding.
2. Mix thoroughly until a smooth, lump-free mortar is achieved.
3. Allow the mixed adhesive to stand for 2 minutes, then remix for 30 seconds before use.
Product Usage Guide
20kg Floor Tiling: approximately 4.0 litres of clean cold water
Notes
– If using an electric drill mixer, blend at slow speed (under 300 rpm).
– Ready for immediate use.
– Pot life at 20°C: approximately 90 minutes.
– Pot life and setting time may vary slightly with temperature: higher temperatures shorten working time, lower temperatures extend it.
