ME501 is a high-strength, tear-resistant membrane made from a polyethylene copolymer film with a non-woven fabric, designed for flexible installation either before or after window fitting to suit site sequencing. It meets the recommendations of the RAL Quality Assurance Association for windows and doors and has been successfully tested to EN1026 for airtightness and EN1027 for weathertightness. The membrane is bonded to the window and surrounding construction using SP525 adhesive, ensuring a reliable and durable seal.

Key points
– High-strength, tear-resistant polyethylene membrane
– Can be installed before or after window installation
– Tested for airtightness (EN1026) and weathertightness (EN1027)
– Meets RAL quality recommendations for windows and doors

ME501 is supplied on 25m rolls.

Suitable for:
– Provides a high-performance seal to perimeter joints between windows/curtain walls and construction reveals
– Intelligent variable vapour permeability (sd value) adapts to internal and external environments
– Vapour-tight on the warm (internal) side and vapour-open on the cold (external) side
– Suitable for both interior and exterior use, ensuring airtightness, weathertightness, and compliance with “inside tighter than outside” principles

Dimensions
– Slit widths available from 60–1,500 mm
– Membrane thickness: 0.6 mm
– Length tolerances in accordance with DIN 7715 P3
– Width tolerance: ± 2.5 mm

Application – Bonding with SP525 Adhesive
After Frame Installation
For full application details, refer to the Method Statement (suitable for single windows, curtain walling, and multiple coupled windows).
1. Ensure the window frame is clean and dry before application.
2. Apply a 10 mm diameter bead of SP525 adhesive to the frame face or edge (as required), positioning it so the membrane can be aligned approximately 15 mm from one edge of the rear (shiny) face.
3. Consolidate the membrane using a seam roller, ensuring adhesive does not squeeze out onto the frame.
4. Once compressed, the adhesive bead should measure approximately 20–30 mm wide and 2–3 mm thick. If achieving a minimum consolidated width of 20 mm is not possible, contact the CPG UK Technical Department for guidance.
5. Although OT015 is primarily intended for bonding ME220 (EPDM) membranes, it may also be used for bonding ME500 and ME501 intelligent membranes—refer to the relevant Technical Data Sheets.

NOTE:
For further information on SP525, consult the Technical Data Sheet available via the website (www.cpg-europe.com).

Technical Information
– While SP525 is typically used to bond the membrane to the window, construction substrate, and to itself, illbruck OT015 High Tack Membrane Adhesive may be required in certain situations.
– OT015 should be used where substrates are unsuitable for SP525 (e.g. certain plastics) or when bonding to EPDM membranes such as illbruck ME220, including ME241 EPDM corners.
– This guidance applies to all references to membrane bonding where substrate compatibility may vary.
Due to its solvent-based nature, care must be taken when using OT015 to avoid damage to sensitive substrates. If unsure, consult the CPG UK Technical Department.
– ME241 EPDM Corners are strongly recommended for forming corner seals, eliminating the need for multiple cuts and folds when installing the ME501 membrane. Refer to the ME241 TDS and method statement for full details. OT015 High Tack Membrane Adhesive must be used to bond ME241 to other components and ME501 to ME241.
– SP525 is the preferred adhesive for bonding ME501 to most construction substrates; however, alternative adhesives may be required depending on substrate type or condition. Seek advice from CPG UK Technical Services if required.
– For improved thermal and/or acoustic insulation at the window-to-construction interface, FM330 Pro Foam Air Seal is recommended for application into the perimeter gap.
– SP525 is a low-odour, solvent- and isocyanate-free alternative to traditional polyurethane adhesives and sealants. It is supplied in 600 ml foils for easier waste disposal.
– Some construction materials may react with the membrane or adhesive. Compatibility testing must be carried out in each case—refer to the relevant technical data sheet for guidance.
– Wall and frame surfaces must be dry and free from oil, grease, dust, and other contaminants before bonding. ME501 must not be applied at temperatures below 5°C.
– Certain substrates may require priming prior to installation. Confirm primer requirements in advance with the CPG UK Technical Services Department.
– In some applications, a metal clamping strip or termination bar may be required to improve membrane fixing to the window frame when using SP525.
– ME501 must always be installed with the non-shiny (fleece) face facing outward to ensure UV resistance for up to 12 months and to allow over-plastering. If the shiny face is exposed, airtightness and weathertightness are unaffected, but the membrane must be covered within two weeks to prevent UV degradation. Partially open rainscreen gaps are considered exposed conditions.
– ME501 is fully compatible with illbruck Building Protection Membranes—refer to separate literature for details.
– For curtain walling applications, allow slack across the membrane width to accommodate movement and prevent stretching. Where significant movement is anticipated, ME220 EPDM Membrane should be used instead.
– Both edges of the membrane must be bonded within a maximum of 72 hours to prevent UV exposure to the shiny face and potential mechanical damage from unsecured membrane sections.
