BOSTIK FP401 Fireseal Acrylic is a professional, one-component fire-resistant sealant based on acrylic dispersion, designed for sealing linear connection joints in gypsum and stony substrates. It is plasto-elastic and slightly intumescent above +120°C, providing up to 4 hours of fire resistance, high sound insulation, and is suitable for interior use. FP401 adheres well to a wide range of construction materials and is paintable. Fire resistance has been tested according to EN 1366-4 up to 120 minutes in joints up to 20mm wide, and up to 180 minutes when combined with BOSTIK FP404 Fire Retardant PU Gun Foam in 30mm gaps. The sealant is easy to tool and clean with water, sustainable, and low in VOC.
Key Points:
– Provides up to 4 hours fire resistance and high sound insulation.
– Slightly intumescent above +120°C and plasto-elastic.
– Tested to EN 1366-4; extended resistance with FP404 PU Gun Foam.
– Water-toolable, paintable, low VOC, and sustainable
PREPARATION
– Work in warm conditions (+5°C to +40°C) with good ventilation.
– Ensure all required materials and tools are ready before starting.
– Joint surfaces must be clean, sound, dry, and free from dust, loose material, or contaminants that could affect adhesion.
– Very porous substrates such as gypsum, aerated concrete, and limestone should be primed with a mixture of 1 part Bostik Pro FP401 Fireseal Acrylic and 2 parts water. Always test adhesion before full application.
– Optionally, apply masking tape along joint edges to achieve a neat, tooled finish and prevent contamination of surrounding surfaces. Use a round-ended spatula to tool the sealant, ensuring excess is caught by the masking tape.
– Perform a trial run without sealant to familiarize yourself with difficult areas, such as corners or raised joints.
APPLICATION
1. Unscrew the nozzle and carefully cut off the cartridge dome with a sharp knife, avoiding damage to the thread. Screw the nozzle onto the cartridge.
2. Cut the tapered end of the nozzle at a 45° angle to match the width of the gap to be sealed.
3. Insert the cartridge into a caulking gun, pressing the release plate and pulling out the plunger. Squeeze the trigger repeatedly until the sealant flows.
4. Place the nozzle at the start of the joint and apply the sealant slowly, ensuring it adheres to both sides. At the end, release the trigger and press the plunger release to stop flow.
5. Correct joint dimensions are essential to accommodate movement between building materials. The depth must correspond appropriately to the joint width.
6. For joints up to 10 mm wide, maintain a 1:1 depth-to-width ratio, with a minimum of 5 mm in both width and depth.
7. For joints wider than 10 mm, depth should be calculated as width ÷ 3 plus 6 mm.
8. Within the working time, smooth the sealant with a wet, round-ended tool (avoid fingers), remove excess with a damp cloth, and then remove masking tape if used.
9. After use, clean any remaining sealant from the nozzle and replace the cap.
10. The sealant skins in approximately 6 minutes and cures at around 1 mm per 24 hours, depending on bead width, temperature, and humidity.
CLEANING
Uncured Sealant: Remove excess mechanically with a soft scraper. Clean remaining residue using a cloth moistened with water; repeat as needed.
Cured Sealant: Cut away excess carefully with a sharp knife. Do not use solvents on skin; clean tools and hands with soap and water.
Regular Cleaning: To maintain appearance, clean regularly. Avoid bleach-based cleaners as they may damage the fungicidal additive.
PAINTABILITY
BOSTIK FP401 FIRESEAL ACRYLIC is paintable with water-based and synthetic paints when fully dry on small joints. For wider joints, paint cracking may occur. Always test paint compatibility before full application.
