Priming
FS500 provides excellent primerless adhesion to many common construction materials. For special situations, or if there is any doubt about adhesion, contact the tremco illbruck Technical Services Department to discuss your requirements.
Joint Design Considerations
– Design joints in accordance with BS 6093.
– For joint width calculations per BS 6093, the Maximum Allowable Factor (MAF) of FS500 is 50%.
– Maintain a width-to-depth ratio of 2:1.
– Minimum joint depth: 6 mm for non-porous substrates, 10 mm for porous substrates. Sealant width should not be less than sealant depth.
– For fillet joints, the minimum bite onto each surface is 10 mm for porous substrates and 6 mm for non-porous substrates.
Surface Preparation
– Ensure joint faces are clean, dry, and free from dust, oil, grease, old sealant, or other contaminants. Mechanically remove any previously applied sealant.
– Clean surfaces thoroughly using a suitable solvent and the two-cloth method: one cloth dampened with cleaner to lift contaminants, followed by a second dry cloth to remove residue.
– Apply masking tape to protect adjacent surfaces from contamination.
– Contact tremco illbruck Technical Services Department for further guidance if needed.
Joint Backing
– Fill deep joints with an approved material such as FM617 360° PU Foam.
– In movement joints, use polyethylene joint backing to control sealant depth and prevent three-sided adhesion.
Application
1. Conduct a test application before installation to confirm compatibility and suitability.
2. Follow BS 8000:16 – “Code of practice for sealing joints in buildings using sealants.”
3. Apply at temperatures between +5°C and +40°C using a conventional skeleton gun or electric/power equipment.
4. Tool all beads immediately after application to ensure full, firm contact with joint faces.
5. Tooling should start without delay due to the rapid skinning of FS500.
Cleaning
– Remove excess sealant immediately using AT200 High Strength Cleaner. Ensure surfaces are solvent-resistant before cleaning.
– Once cured, sealant can only be removed mechanically.
Please Note
– Not suitable for permanent immersion, use on materials susceptible to constituent migration (e.g., certain rubbers), or for food contact.
– Do not use in areas subject to abrasion or physical abuse (e.g., trafficable joints).
– Not suitable for overpainting. Test before use on sensitive substrates such as marble or architectural stones.
– Where staining is a concern, use FA870.
