METHOD OF APPLICATION

SURFACE PREPARATION
Prior to application, surfaces must be clean, dry and free from any oils. The surface treatment depends on the specific nature of the surfaces, and is crucial for a bond that lasts.

APPLICATION
Sikaflex 522 can be processed between 5 °C and 40 °C, but changes in reactivity and application properties need to be taken into consideration. The optimum temperature for substrate and sealant bonding is between 15-25°C.
Be aware that the viscosity will increase at lower temperatures. For easy application, condition the adhesive at an ambient temperature prior to use. Sikaflex 522 can be processed with manual, pneumatic or electric driven guns, as well as pump equipment. The skin time will significantly decrease in hot and humid climates. For further advice on selecting and setting up a reliable pump system, contact the System Engineering Department of Sika Industry.

TOOLING & FINISHING
Tooling and finishing must be carried out within the sealants skin time. It’s recommended using Sika Tooling Agent N. Other finishing agents must be tested for suitability and compatibility prior the use.

Overpaintable:

Sikaflex 522 can be painted best within the skin formation time. If the painting process takes place after the sealant has built a skin, adhesion could be improved by treating the joint with Sika Aktivator 100 or 205 prior to painting. If the paint requires a baking process (> 80 °C), the best performance is achieved by first allowing the sealant to fully cure. All paints must be tested first. The elasticity of most paints is usually lower than that of the sealants and this could lead to the paint cracking in the joint area.
