Hodgson Sealants Silfix U7N is a specialized silicone sealant and adhesive designed for professional users, particularly in sanitary and plumbing applications. Here are some key features and applications of Silfix U7N:

  1. Low modulus and alkoxy cure: Silfix U7N is a low modulus silicone, which means it has high flexibility and can accommodate movement without cracking. The alkoxy cure mechanism releases alcohol during curing, resulting in a neutral cure silicone sealant.
  2. Exceptional tooling properties: The sealant is formulated with properties that make it easy to tool and shape, allowing for neat and precise application.
  3. Suitable for sanitary and plumbing applications: Silfix U7N is ideal for use in industrial, commercial, and domestic settings, where a highly elastic product that doesn’t shrink or crack is required. It is well-suited for sealing and bonding in bathrooms, kitchens, and other plumbing-related areas.
  4. Excellent adhesion to non-porous substrates: The product offers strong adhesion to a variety of non-porous materials, including glass, ceramics, aluminium, and painted timber. This ensures a reliable and long-lasting seal in various applications.
  5. Contains a fungicide: Silfix U7N is formulated with a fungicide, which helps prevent the growth of mould and mildew in damp or high-moisture environments, making it suitable for sanitary applications.
  6. No strong odour: The sealant is designed to have a minimal or no strong odour during application, ensuring a more pleasant working environment.

With its versatile properties and suitability for various applications, Silfix U7N provides a durable and flexible seal in sanitary and plumbing installations. As with any sealant or adhesive, it’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and test compatibility with specific substrates before use.

Silfix U7N is a versatile silicone sealant and adhesive that can be used for various sealing and bonding applications, especially in sanitary and plumbing areas. Here are the main applications where Silfix U7N can be used:

  1. Sealing around baths, basins, and shower trays: Silfix U7N is well-suited for sealing joints and gaps around baths, basins, and shower trays to prevent water leakage and ensure a watertight seal.
  2. Sealing between dissimilar materials: The sealant is effective in sealing joints between different materials, such as uPVC, aluminium, composite, and timber frames into masonry, brick, and plaster walls. It provides strong adhesion and a flexible seal, accommodating movement between the materials.
  3. Most sanitary applications: Silfix U7N is designed for use in various sanitary applications, making it suitable for sealing in bathrooms, kitchens, and other plumbing-related areas where waterproofing and resistance to moisture are essential.
  4. Waterproofing of rimless sinks: The sealant can be used to provide waterproofing and a secure seal around rimless sinks, preventing water from seeping into gaps or joints.
  5. General sealing and caulking applications: Silfix U7N is suitable for general sealing and caulking tasks in construction and renovation projects. It can be used to seal gaps, joints, and connections in various building materials.
  6. Connection joints of plumbing fixtures and ceramic tiles: The sealant is appropriate for sealing connection joints between plumbing fixtures (such as sinks and toilets) and ceramic tiles, providing a durable and water-resistant seal.

It’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and recommendations for the specific application to ensure optimal performance and results. Silfix U7N’s properties, such as excellent adhesion, flexibility, and resistance to mold and mildew, make it a reliable choice for various sealing and bonding needs in sanitary and plumbing applications.

APPLICATION

  1. Joint design: Prior to application, refer to the Technical Information Sheet titled ‘Joint design for cartridge-based products.’ This document will provide specific guidelines on preparing the joint and achieving the best results.
  2. Surface preparation:
    • Ensure all surfaces are clean: Remove any dust, dirt, or debris from the joint or surface that will be sealed. Clean the area thoroughly to ensure proper adhesion of the silicone sealant.
    • Dry surfaces: Make sure the surfaces are completely dry before applying the sealant. Moisture or water on the surfaces can affect the adhesion and curing process of the silicone.
    • No frost: Do not apply the sealant if the surfaces are frosty or frozen, as this can hinder the proper bonding of the sealant.
    • Free from grease and loose materials: Remove any grease or oily substances from the surfaces. Also, clear away any loose materials or old sealant that may interfere with the new application.
    • Apply primer if necessary: In some cases, especially with certain substrates, a primer may be required to enhance adhesion. Refer to the product guidelines or perform testing to determine if a primer is necessary.
  3. Masking for neat finish:
    • In situations where a particularly neat finish is desired, use masking tape to cover the face edges of the joint before applying the sealant. This will help achieve clean edges.
    • Remove the masking tape immediately after tooling to avoid smudging or disrupting the sealant.
  4. Preparing the cartridge:
    • Cut the tip of the screw thread off the cartridge and screw on the nozzle.
    • Cut the nozzle to the correct diameter for the size of the joint you’ll be sealing. This ensures precise application.
  5. Application:
    • Use a skeleton or powered gun to apply the Silfix U7N sealant into the joint, ensuring good contact with the surfaces on both sides.
    • For deep joints, use Backing Rod to ensure proper joint formation. Backing Rod helps fill the gap and improve the effectiveness of the sealant.
  6. Tooling:
    • Tool the sealant immediately after application within the working time specified for the product. Tooling involves using a suitable tool (such as a spatula or tooling spoon) to smooth and shape the sealant for a neat and professional finish.

By following these instructions carefully, you can achieve the best results when using Silfix U7N silicone sealant for your sealing and bonding applications. Always consult the product’s technical datasheet and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for specific applications.

LIMITATIONS

  1. Not for aquaria construction or long-term underwater applications: Silfix U7N is not suitable for use in constructing aquariums or for applications where it will be continuously submerged in water for extended periods.
  2. Not recommended for low surface energy materials: The sealant may not adhere effectively to materials with low surface energy, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and Teflon. For these materials, consider using a specialized adhesive or sealant.
  3. Avoid use with bitumen, asphalt, or natural stones: Silfix U7N is not suitable for bonding or sealing in conjunction with bitumen, asphalt, or natural stone materials.
  4. Not for use as a mirror adhesive: Silfix U7N is not recommended for attaching mirrors. For mirror adhesion applications, consider using a mirror adhesive specifically designed for this purpose.
  5. Not suitable for contact with edge sealants of double-glazed units: Avoid using Silfix U7N in contact with the edge sealants of double-glazed units. Instead, use Silfix U9 for such applications.
  6. The material is not paintable: Once cured, Silfix U7N silicone sealant cannot be painted over. If a paintable sealant is required, select a suitable paintable sealant for the specific application.
  7. Priming recommended for certain surfaces: To achieve optimum adhesion, it is recommended to prime surfaces such as concrete and gypsum before applying Silfix U7N. Priming helps improve the bond between the sealant and the substrate.

Adhering to these guidelines and precautions will ensure the proper and effective use of Silfix U7N silicone sealant. Always refer to the product’s technical datasheet and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for specific applications. If uncertain about the suitability of the product for a particular use, seek advice from the manufacturer or a qualified professional.
