Mapei Primer G is a synthetic resin-based primer that, upon application to any surface, dries to create a flexible, glossy coating that enhances the integrity of the surface as needed. Primer G also enhances the bonding of smoothing compounds, paint, wallpaper adhesive, tile adhesive, and mortar for rendering. The layer on gypsum or cement surfaces acts as a barrier, preventing chemical reactions between sulfates and cement aluminates in gypsum that, when exposed to moisture, can lead to the formation of the problematic “ettringite” salt, which can cause separation. When used before wallpapering, Primer G reduces surface absorption, resulting in less adhesive usage and making wallpaper removal easier.

Additionally, when applied prior to sprayable plasters, it hinders excessive water absorption by the substrate, extending the working time and helping prevent shrinkage cracks. When used before applying self-leveling compounds, Primer G minimizes the formation of air bubbles and assists in preventing rapid drying, making self-leveling applications more manageable. Mapei Primer G is non-flammable and can be safely used in enclosed, unventilated spaces without special precautions.

Mapei Primer G is ideal for the following applications:

  • Suitable for priming gypsum surfaces before the installation of ceramic tiles.
  • Functions as a bonding coat for gypsum-based sprayable plasters.
  • Enhances the adhesion of smoothing compounds on both cementitious and anhydrite and gypsum-based surfaces.
  • Ensures consistent absorption on cementitious or gypsum surfaces.

Application Scenarios

  • Preparing cement-based surfaces prior to the application of self-leveling or thixotropic smoothing compounds.
  • Applied between layers of smoothing compounds once the initial coat is completely dry.
  • Utilized on gypsum plasters before applying cementitious smoothing products.
  • Applied to anhydrite surfaces prior to the use of cement-based products.
  • Used on cementitious renders before applying gypsum-based smoothing products.
  • Employed on gypsum walls as a stabilizing agent for wallpaper adhesives.
  • Applied before installing ceramic tiles with cementitious adhesives on the following surfaces:
    • Gypsum plasters and sprayed gypsum
    • Pre-cast gypsum panels
    • Fibrous-gypsum panels
    • Anhydrite screeds
  • Treating gypsum walls, chipboard, cement fiberboards, foamed concrete, renders, and similar surfaces before wallpapering or painting.

APPLICATION

Substrate Preparation

The substrate must meet specific criteria, including cleanliness, dryness, and freedom from oils, grease, residual paint, and loose materials. For gypsum-plaster surfaces, it’s essential to adhere to the manufacturer’s recommendations, particularly regarding moisture content and surface finish. For concrete surfaces with cracks, repairs should be carried out using Eporip or Epojet. Anhydrite surfaces should be sanded for proper adhesion.

Application

a) Treatment for Ceramic Tiles on Gypsum:

  • Prior to use, gently stir the primer.
  • Apply it evenly to the surface using a flat brush or roller without dilution.
  • In cases where the gypsum plaster surface is exceptionally smooth and glossy, it’s advisable to lightly sand it before application.
  • After it has dried, proceed with tile installation.

b) Anchoring Coat for Gypsum Plasters:

  • Dilute the primer with water in a 1:2 ratio and mix thoroughly.
  • Apply the mixture uniformly to the surface using a flat brush, roller, or spray pump.
  • Once the primer is dry, proceed with the application of sprayable gypsum plaster.

c) Primer for Self-Leveling and Thixotropic Compounds (MAPEI Range):

  • For cementitious substrates, dilute the primer in a 1:1 ratio with water.
  • For gypsum-based substrates, use Primer G undiluted.

d) Primer for Wallpaper Adhesives:

  • Dilute primer with water in a 1:3 ratio.

e) Primer Between Smoothing Layers:

  • Dilute primer with water in a 1:1 ratio.
