Mapei Ultralite S1 is a low-dust, one-component, and flexible lightweight adhesive designed for both walls and floors – the S1 adhesive. This adhesive boasts a non-slip formula with an extended open time, making it an ideal choice for various tile applications, including ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone tiles, as well as mosaics. It excels, particularly when used for affixing thin porcelain tiles. Suitable for application on screed, render, and plywood substrates, this adhesive is not only versatile but also environmentally conscious, containing over 30% recycled materials and producing minimal dust when mixed.

Furthermore, compared to conventional Mapei adhesives, it offers impressive coverage with up to a 60% increase. In terms of coverage, you can expect approximately 0.9 kg/m2 per millimeter of thickness, which translates to a range of 1.5-2.5 kg/m2.

Mapei Ultralite S1 is suitable for:

  1. Adhering various ceramic tiles, including double-fired, single-fired, porcelain, klinker, and terracotta, on both uneven internal and external substrates without the need for prior surface leveling.
  2. Ensuring secure bonding of mosaic tiles on both interior and exterior surfaces, even suitable for use in swimming pools.
  3. Reliable bonding of natural stone on both internal and external surfaces, provided the stone is stable and not susceptible to humidity.
  4. Affixing porcelain tiles without mesh backing to both floors and walls, including external facades.

APPLICATION

Substrate Preparation: The substrates must possess mechanical strength and should be free from loose components, grease, oil, paint residues, and similar contaminants. They must also be adequately dry. For cementitious substrates, it’s crucial to ensure they don’t shrink after tile installation. In favorable weather conditions, rendering should be allowed to cure for a minimum of one week per centimeter of thickness, while cementitious screeds should cure for at least 28 days unless special MAPEI binders like Mapecem or Topcem, or pre-blended mortars such as Mapecem Pronto or Topcem Pronto, are used. In cases of excessive heat due to direct sunlight, cooling with water is recommended.

Gypsum substrates and anhydrite screeds should be thoroughly dry, possess the required hardness for their intended use, and be free of dust and laitance. They should also be treated with Primer G or Eco Prim T Plus. Substrates intended for thin porcelain tiles should be perfectly level. When necessary, even out the substrate before installing the flooring using a self-leveling compound from MAPEI’s product range.

Mixing: In a clean mixing container, add approximately 7.3-7.8 liters of water per 15 kg bag of Ultralite S1 in grey or 7.5-7.9 liters per 15 kg bag of Ultralite S1 in white. Mechanically mix the product until you obtain a smooth, lump-free paste. Allow the product to stand for around 5 minutes before giving it a second mix. When mixed as described, the product has a pot life of roughly 8 hours. Avoid adding extra water once the product begins to set.

Application: Apply Ultralite S1 to the substrate using a notched trowel. Choose a trowel with notches that ensure complete coverage on the back of the tile. For a strong bond, apply a thin layer of Ultralite S1 to the substrate using the smooth side of the trowel, then immediately apply another layer of Ultralite S1 to achieve the desired thickness using a suitable trowel based on tile type and size. When affixing tiles to floors or wet areas, spread the adhesive on the back of the tile as well to ensure complete coverage. When installing thin porcelain floor tiles, it’s recommended to also spread adhesive on the backs of the tiles using the appropriate notched trowel to eliminate gaps and minimize the risk of fractures during use. The maximum bed depth should not exceed 15 mm.

Tile Installation: Tiles do not require pre-wetting but should be dipped in clean water if their back surfaces are particularly dusty. Ensure they are dry before placement. When laying tiles, apply firm pressure and use a twisting or sliding motion to ensure proper contact. Ultralite S1 has an open time of at least 30 minutes under normal weather and humidity conditions. However, this time may be shorter in less ideal conditions (e.g., direct sunlight, dry wind, high temperatures, or absorbent substrates). Therefore, regularly check for the formation of a surface skin on the adhesive and reapply with the notched trowel if necessary. Avoid wetting the adhesive surface if a skin forms since water doesn’t dissolve it and can hinder a good bond. Final tile adjustments must be made within 45 minutes of placement. Tiles installed using Ultralite S1 should be shielded from water and rain for a minimum of 24 hours and from frost and direct sunlight for 5 to 7 days.
