Mapei Ultraflex S2 Quick, a gray-hued powder, comprises a unique blend of specialized cements, carefully graded sand, a substantial amount of synthetic resins, and micronized elastomers, all formulated within MAPEI’s dedicated Research Laboratories. When combined with water, it yields a mortar with the following distinct attributes:

  1. Innovative Ultralite TechnologyTM yields a lightweight product, providing two notable advantages: a. Weight advantage: Ultraflex S2 Quick, weighing less than traditional cementitious adhesives of equivalent volume, facilitates easier handling and reduces transportation costs. b. Enhanced yield: Approximately 30% higher yield compared to MAPEI’s conventional cementitious adhesives.
  2. Low viscosity, ensuring outstanding wetting properties and ease of application.
  3. Highly thixotropic nature: Ultraflex S2 Quick can be applied on vertical surfaces without sagging, eliminating the risk of tiles slipping. It also allows for tile installation from the top, working downwards and diagonally, without the need for spacer pegs.
  4. Exceptional ability to accommodate substrate and tile deformations.
  5. Strong adhesion to all commonly used materials in the construction industry.

Notably, Ultraflex S2 Quick achieves robust bonding strength in as little as 2-3 hours at +23°C (or 8 hours at +10°C), enabling the use of finished floors in a remarkably short time frame.

Mapei Ultraflex S2 Quick is designed for bonding ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone tiles, including mosaics, of various sizes and types. It can be used for both internal and external applications. Here are some examples of its versatile applications:

  1. Adhering tiles to cementitious and gypsum/anhydrite-based screeds.
  2. Installing tiles on floors with underfloor or undertile heating systems, enclosed within suitable screeds or smoothing compounds.
  3. Bonding tiles to floorboards, exterior-grade plywood, and P5 grade chipboard timber floors.
  4. Over existing tiled surfaces.
  5. Attaching tiles to prefabricated concrete walls and concrete floors.
  6. Bonding with cementitious or lime-based renders and gypsum plaster.
  7. Suitable for plasterboard and tile backer boards.
  8. Compatible with Mapei waterproofing and anti-fracture membranes.
  9. Ideal for areas requiring fast-track installation, such as public buildings, supermarkets, pedestrian walkways, airports, etc.
  10. Effective for areas exposed to direct sunlight and temperature variations, such as facades, balconies, and roof terraces.
  11. Useful in spaces where reducing impact noise from footsteps is essential, such as hospital entrance halls, school corridors, and public buildings. (When used in conjunction with Mapesonic CR acoustic membrane, its performance in noise reduction is further enhanced).

This adhesive offers a wide range of applications, making it suitable for various tiling projects across different settings.

APPLICATION

Substrate Preparation:

  • The substrate should be robust, dry, and devoid of loose or crumbling sections, as well as free from grease, oil, paint, and wax.
  • Cementitious substrates used for ceramic tile installations should ideally not exhibit shrinkage after tile placement.
  • Ultraflex S2 Quick offers exceptional flexibility, capable of compensating for micro-cracks that may develop in the screed if it hasn’t adequately cured. Therefore, it’s possible to tile over standard sand/cement screeds with ceramic or porcelain tiles and mosaics once the screed is sufficiently cured for foot traffic without causing indentations.
  • Gypsum substrates and anhydrite screeds should be completely dry, suitably hardened, dust-free, and treated with Primer G or Eco Prim T Plus in all cases.

Mixing:

  • Combine 15 kg of Ultraflex S2 Quick with 5.1 – 5.4 liters of clean water until a smooth, lump-free paste forms. Allow the mixture to stand for 5 minutes before re-mixing.
  • The prepared mixture remains usable for approximately 30 minutes.

Product Application:

  • Apply Ultraflex S2 Quick onto the substrate using a notched trowel. Ensure a proper coat on the tile’s back by using a trowel that guarantees even application.
  • For optimal adhesion, apply a thin layer of Ultraflex S2 Quick onto the substrate using the smooth side of the trowel. Then, immediately apply an additional layer of Ultraflex S2 Quick to the required thickness using an appropriate notched trowel, considering the tile size and type.
  • When installing tiles on floors, in wet areas, or on exterior surfaces, apply adhesive to the tile’s back to ensure complete coverage, with a maximum bed depth of 10 mm.

Tile Installation:

  • Tiles do not need to be wetted before installation. However, if the tile backs are particularly dusty, it is advisable to clean them by dipping them in clean water.
  • Apply slight pressure while placing the tiles to ensure proper adhesion. Employ a twisting/sliding motion to guarantee full contact.
  • Under normal temperature and humidity conditions, Ultraflex S2 Quick provides an open time of approximately 15-20 minutes. Adverse conditions, such as direct sunlight, dry wind, high temperatures, or highly absorbent substrates, may reduce this time to just a few minutes.
  • Continuously monitor the adhesive to prevent the formation of a surface skin. If a skin does form, reapply the adhesive using the notched trowel. Avoid wetting the adhesive when a surface skin forms, as water can create a film that hinders bonding instead of facilitating it.

Final Steps:

  • Finishes installed with Ultraflex S2 Quick should not be washed or exposed to rain for a minimum of 3-4 hours. Protect them from freezing conditions or direct sunlight for at least 24 hours after installation.
